Chief Imam orders police to stop public-preaching Muslims

0
IslamThe Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haruun has called on the Ashanti Regional Police Command to halt all public preaching involving Muslim sects in Kumasi. Sheikh Haruun says the police have been “directed to stop them from preaching with loud speakers in lorry parks and open places to avert any fight among these sects”. The Chief Imam was commenting on what transpired at Aboabo Number Two in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region where two Muslim sects clashed over some comments. There was a clash between two Islamic sects, the Tijaniyya, and the Al-Sunna Muslim groups during the week in which two people were injured from machete attack and windscreens of two vehicles were smashed in the course of the violence. The clash was said to have started as a result of an insult followers of the two sects traded on Facebook but some followers of the Al-Sunna youths allegedly identified and assaulted a young man they believed had been insulting their leader on Facebook. This angered members of the Tijaniyya sect who reacted to the attack on their member resulting in the clash. Speaking on Onua FM’s ‘Yen Sempa’ hosted by Kwame Karikari, the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam said they have also realized the two sects have their mosques closer so the police have been alerted to ensure they do not preach with loud speakers. “They should preach inside. They should not preach outside too because this can bring political violence due to the elections”. He said they have information that “they insult each other always through preaching and that is dangerous”. Sheikh Haruun promised they will meet the sects to resolve the issue. SP Cephas Arthur: “The police have set up an enquiry to investigate the issue.”
The Ghana Police Service is investigating one of its female personnel whose sex video leaked and went viral on social media early this week. Director of Public Affairs of the Service, Supt. Cephas Arthur confirmed the lady at the centre of the video that has been circulating on WhatsApp is indeed one of their officers, noting a service enquiry has commenced to establish if she has flouted any law. “The police have set up an enquiry to investigate the issue, we will check if she has flouted any laws of Ghana or the Police Service, Supt Arthur told Onua FM’s Christian Agyei Frimpong Friday. He said the investigation would also seek to establish the source of the leak, saying “We will also investigate who circulated the video. if it was something she did for her private personal use and someone circulated it, then it’s a criminal matter, if she took those video herself, circulated it, we shall investigate all.” The lady [name withheld], a Sergeant,  who was stationed at the Sunyani Regional Police CID, was said to have been transferred to the Police CID Headquarters in Accra following the leak of the sex video. Sources say the lady has fallen sick due to the incident and currently on admission at the Police Hospital in Accra. She was said to have attempted suicide but this, Supt Arthur said, “I have not heard anything about what you are asking me, but I can tell you she is safe, alive, doing well and we have started our investigations” The lady is seen in the video, which appeared to have been recorded with a webcam, naked in a room where she danced and made sexually teasing moves while she played with her body seductively. Debris and body parts have been found in the Mediterranean Sea by teams searching for a missing EgyptAir plane, Greek and Egyptian officials say.

Flight MS804 was en route from Paris to Cairo with 66 passengers and crew when it vanished early on Thursday. Items including seats and luggage has also been retrieved by Egyptian search crews. The debris was discovered about 290km (180 miles) north of Alexandria, the Egyptian military said. European Space Agency satellites spotted an oil slick in the area where the flight had vanished but the organisation said there was no guarantee it was from the missing plane. The search is now focused on finding the plane’s flight recorders, the Associated Press news agency reports. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has expressed his “utmost sadness and regret” at the crash. Greek, Egyptian, French and UK military units have been taking part in a search operation near Greece’s Karpathos island. Greece said radar showed the Airbus A320 had made two sharp turns and dropped more than 25,000ft (7,620m) before plunging into the sea.

The focus of the investigation

Egypt says the plane was more likely to have been brought down by a terrorist act than a technical fault. However, there has been “absolutely no indication” so far as to why the plane came down, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said on Friday morning. Three investigators from the French air accident investigation bureau, along with a technical adviser from Airbus, have joined the Egyptian inquiry. The BBC has learned the plane that disappeared was forced to make an emergency landing in 2013 after the pilot noticed the engine overheating, but an official report said defect was repaired. In France, the focus is on whether a possible breach of security happened at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. After last November’s Paris attacks, some airport staff had their security clearance revoked over fears of links to Islamic extremists. Eric Moutet, a lawyer for some of those employees, told the BBC that there had been attempts by Islamists to recruit airport staff. “That is clear,” he said. “There are people who are being radicalised in some of the trade unions, etc. The authorities have their work cut out with this problem.” In October, an Airbus A321 operated by Russia’s Metrojet blew up over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, with all 224 people on board killed. Sinai Province, a local affiliate of the Islamic State jihadist group, said it had smuggled a bomb on board.

What do we know about what happened?

Flight MS804 left Paris at 23:09 local time on Wednesday (21:09 GMT) and was scheduled to arrive in the Egyptian capital soon after 03:15 local time (01:15 GMT) on Thursday. On the plane were 56 passengers, seven crew members and three security personnel. Greek aviation officials say air traffic controllers spoke to the pilot when he entered Greek airspace and everything appeared normal. They tried to contact him again at 02:27 Cairo time, as the plane was set to enter Egyptian airspace, but “despite repeated calls, the aircraft did not respond”. Two minutes later it vanished from radar.

Anomalies, rumours, conspiracies: By Richard Westcott, BBC transport correspondent

Flight MS804's possibly final movements
I have reported on many air accidents and there is a pattern. The early days are filled with anomalies, rumours and conspiracy theories. Take the claim from the Greek government that the plane “swerved” and dropped height dramatically. Does that suggest a fight in the cockpit? An air accident expert told me it could mean anything. It could indicate that the pilots were struggling with a broken plane, although it does not explain how it broke. Was it a bomb, or a mechanical catastrophe? It could also be that the radar simply picked up large parts of an aircraft that had already split up in mid-air. A security expert also told me that if it was a terrorist group, they would not necessarily have claimed it by now.

Man arrested for threatening to blow up Italian Embassy

Police officers arrived at the Embassy to arrest the man
There was drama at the Italian Embassy in Accra Friday morning as a young man threatened to blow up the Embassy, located on the Switchback Crescent, Cantonments. The Counter Terrorism Unit of the Ghana Police Service however, acted swiftly and bundled him away before he could actualize his threat. The unnamed young man, said to be a visa applicant, had stormed the Embassy with a gas cylinder and a lighter ready to torch the place. Superintendent Raymond Aggrey Fynn, Head of the Counter Terrorism Unit who led a team to arrest the man, along with his family including his wife, son and brother, told Graphic Online that the suspect had earlier in the morning been reported to have hurled stones into the Embassy compound amidst threats to blow it up. “We understand he had a misunderstanding with the Embassy officials. When we came here earlier after the stone-throwing reports, he had left, only for him to return with gas and fire to attempt to carry out his threat”, he told Graphic Online. A brother of the suspect broke down in tears as police vehicles drove the family to the CID Unit at the Police Headquarters. Eyewitnesses By-standers who witnessed the drama claimed the man had complained repeatedly of the Embassy’s refusal to return his documents, including birth and marriage certificates of his wife who had been refused the visa. Their young son, however, had been granted the visa. Another claim was that the man’s frustration had stemmed from the Embassy’s endorsement of his wife’s travelling documents in ways that rendered them ‘useless’. “But how do you give a child visa and refuse his mother?” quipped one witness, who added, “Does it make sense or they want the child to go and stay alone?” Help the police When calm had been restored, Superintendent Raymond Aggrey Fynn found it an opportunity to counsel other visa applicants and members of the public who had gathered at the scene on their immediate responsibilities, safety and security in matters of police operations. He said the entire drama could have been avoided had members of the public been vigilant enough to at least alert the police when the man walked by them with the cylinder and lighter threatening destruction. Again, he said, most of the people were gleefully watching the unfolding drama at close quarters even as the police deployed to quell the threat, thereby putting themselves in harm’s way and that in such developing situations, even the police could be victims. He said in such a situation, everyone needed to move as far away as they could to avoid becoming victims. Source Graphic Online

USAID hosts entrepreneurship summit for African innovators & investors

0
USAID logoOn May 19, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) hosted a networking event for African entrepreneurs, innovators, and investors.
The workshop gave forward-thinking Ghanaians an opportunity to network one-on-one and collaborate with investors, government officials, business representatives, and educators to fuel entrepreneurship for the benefit of Ghana. USAID Assistant Administrator for Africa Linda Etim opened the conference and U.S. Ambassador to Ghana Robert P. Jackson delivered closing remarks. “Nurturing a supportive entrepreneurship ecosystem is critical for innovation, creativity, and imagination to thrive and persist.  Therefore, it is important that we fully grasp what hinders and what enhances entrepreneurship in various environments and contexts,” remarked Ambassador Jackson. “This will help accelerate change and create the much-needed jobs that—among other benefits—will address youth unemployment.” The event is modelled after President Barack Obama’s annual Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES). President Obama will host the 7th GES at Stanford University, in California’s Silicon Valley, June 22-24. The 2016 GES will bring together approximately 1,000 people who represent the full measure of entrepreneurial talent in the United States and internationally. The GES reflects the U.S. government’s commitment to use entrepreneurship as a tool to build communities around the world to become more economically prosperous, secure and globally connected.
