University students demand extension of voter registration at campuses

file photoThe University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG) has entreated the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to extend deadline of the ongoing limited voter registration at campuses.
The nationwide registration exercise is scheduled to end on Sunday, May 8 after entering its second phase on Wednesday, May 4. But the students claim about 100,000 risk being disenfranchised as a result of the EC failing “to provide registration centres on some campuses or chosen to not provide adequate registration kits on campus to facilitate the process”. This was contained in statement issued on Tuesday, May 3. “We have had instances where students have had to queue for days without success, whiles having to respond to the natural pressures of revising for exams,” the statement said. Read full statement below: PRESS RELEASE STATEMENT FROM THE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION OF GHANA (USAG) TO THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION (EC) OF GHANA USAG CONCERNED ABOUT EFFECTIVE DISENFRANCHISEMENT OF GHANAIAN STUDENTS BY EC We write to register our concerns over the ongoing limited registration exercise which we are afraid is not designed to encourage or allow eligible Ghanaians who are students to register to vote in 2016. The Commission has set a 10-day period for this limited registration exercise, starting from April 28 to May 8. We are already half way through the exercise and per our calculations, less than 10 percent of the estimated number of young Ghanaian students eligible to vote has been able to so far register. If this trend continues, we are afraid it will amount effectively to an administrative decision taken by the EC that has only led to disenfranchising the majority of young Ghanaian students who have come of age to vote. This would be a tragedy against our democracy. Currently, over 100,000 Ghanaian students across campuses up and down the country are facing challenges just trying to register. This is because the EC has either failed to provide registration centres on some campuses or chosen to not provide adequate registration kits on campus to facilitate the process. We have had instances where students have had to queue for days without success, whiles having to respond to the natural pressures of revising for exams. For instance, the University of Ghana, Legon, has about 28,000 students on campus and most of them are in the qualifying category to register. However the whole Legon Campus community has only one registration center. The Mampong campus of the University of Education has no registration centre on campus. The students have access to a centre inconveniently situated outside of the campus. Also, the highly populated Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology has not a single registration centre on campus. Students wanting to register have to trek outside of campus to do so. Indeed, there is not a single tertiary institution in Ghana which has not been inconvenienced by the way the EC has chosen to conduct this exercise. Indeed, students are even compelled by the circumstances to conclude that it appears the EC has deliberately done things in this way to discourage them from registering to vote. This perception is very unfortunate and needless. It was avoidable because the EC knows from experience and from its own expectation to register 1.2 million people that the highest concentration of the targeted group for the limited registration exercise are to be found on campuses across the country. So in deciding to distribute 3,500 registration kits across the country it ought to have positively discriminated in favour of students and deployed more than the usual number to campuses. In this regard we entreat the EC to as a matter of urgency: 1. Extend the days for the limited voter registration exercise on our campuses across the country and; 2. Increase the number of registration kits available on campuses to facilitate speedy and smooth process. This we believe will make the limited voter registration exercise meaningful and inclusive to achieve the goal of enfranchising new eligible voters. The EC cannot claim to be registering Ghanaians who have come of age when at the same time it has put together a process that effectively prevents people from registering or frustrates their efforts to so do. This is most odd, indeed. It is our expectation that the Commission will treat this matter with the urgency, efficiency and professionalism it deserves. Ghanaian students have a constitutional duty and right to play their full part in determining how our nation is governed. To take this away is to effectively cause a coup against our collective constitutional right and duty. Source: tv3network.com|Ghana

Jordan Ayew under investigation in England

file photoThe Football Association says it will investigate striker Jordan Ayew’s actions during Aston Villa’s 3-2 defeat at Watford on Saturday.
Relegated Villa were leading 2-1 at Vicarage Road before two late goals from Watford captain Troy Deeney. Ayew and team-mate Idrissa Gana Gueye were then allegedly involved in an incident involving home supporters. Reports suggest the Ghana international, 24, climbed over advertising boards to confront fans. Ayew, who was substituted in the 79th minute, is believed to have taken exception to something said in the Sir Elton John Stand. His low drive had earlier restored Villa’s lead, but Aly Cissokho was sent off with 17 minutes to play and Watford mounted a late comeback. By TV3 Sports|Ghana

EC’s registration exercise resumes with massive turn-out

file photoThe second phase of the Electoral Commission’s (EC)’s Limited Registration Exercise across the country has seen a massive turnout today.
A visit to some registration centers reveals long queues, with confusion and misunderstanding ensuing at some of the centres. The EC exercise which started last week Thursday went on break yesterday but resumed today, Wednesday. The exercise in general has been peaceful with the exception of few reported cases of violence caused by two major political parties, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). Onua News reporter, Abena Obaaku Amponsah reports from Mamprobi Girls School in the Ablekuma South Constituency of the Greater Accra Region that most of the prospective voters in queues look like minors. This, she said, created confusion between the NDC and NPP members at the centres. The 10-day voter registration exercise will end on Sunday, May 8. Story by Kweku Antwi-Otoo/Onua FM/tv3network.com

Afari Gyan was manipulated to disqualify me – Mrs. Rawlings suggests

0
file photoFormer First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has lashed out at former Chairman of the Electoral Commission for allowing himself to be used by the powers that be when he was at the helm of affairs at the Commission.
Mrs. Rawlings, who was disqualified by the Commission then chaired by Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan when she attempted to contest the presidential race on the ticket of the newly-formed National Democratic Party (NDP) in 2012, said she cannot still come to terms with why she was disqualified. The EC had explained to Nana Konadu’s NDP that her application was rejected because she failed to meet all the requirements set out by the Commission for presidential candidates. But on Wednesday May 04, 2016, Mrs. Rawlings told Bright Nana Amfoh on TV3 New Day she cannot accept blame for disappointing her followers in 2012. “Any sane persons will ask why did Afari Gyan do what he did. I am still asking myself why he did that,” she questioned that disqualification. She was convinced she met all the requirements. According her, she has tried to put that incident behind her, but for Dr. Afari Gyan, “he decided to do that, for me it will be with him for the rest of his life”. Mrs. Rawlings explained that any time the former Chairman of the Electoral Commission sees her, he tries to plead innocent and suggests that accepting her candidature would have brought a number of troubles to him. “I know there is something that he hasn’t told me, but others at the Commission had told me what it was,” she claimed. The National Democratic Party broke away from the governing National Democratic Congress in the run-up to the 2012 elections. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was endorsed for the second time by the NDP on Saturday to lead the party into the 2016 general elections as its presidential candidate. She told TV3 the vision of the NDP is to empower Ghanaians and prayed the current commissioners at the EC would not allowed themselves to be controlled by external forces “Definitely I am not going to disappoint my supporters,” she promised. Nana Konadu calls for impeachment of non-performing presidents

0
Nana Konadu is the flagbearer of the National Democratic PartyLeader and Founder of the National Democratic Party (NDP) Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings has advocated the consideration of a legislation to impeach Ghanaian leaders who fail to deliver on their mandates.
The former first lady contends that the four-year election cycle sometimes tends to be frustrating especially under a non-performing regimes. The recently endorsed flagbearer of the NDP made this known on Wednesday, May 4 in an exclusive interview on TV3’s New Day. “The people must be so empowered that we run a system that can actually give us a chance…in America they will impeach you. In the UK, they will say call new elections. Here, we have to wait till they plummet us on the head with the hammer almost in the ground before an election comes again.” 4 or 8 years She said most Ghanaians even assume the presidential mandate is eight years. Nana Konadu blames the situation on the way the constitution has been drafted. “We should look at our constitution again because it looks like we have a constitution that allows us to change leaders every four years. Some think it is 8 years…No it is four years. If you perform well we give you another four years. If you don’t perform well and [have] done abysmally, you don’t force us to take you back,” she told host Bright Nana Amfoh. She lamented how elected presidents will assume office and close all avenues to the extent that whatever the leader does can only be challenged at the next elections. “There must be something that we can do when we can see that our leader is leading us astray.” ‘Completely collapsed’ It is unclear what Nana Konadu is calling for but she was clear on the fact that Ghana’s economy has collapsed. She said going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is a clear indication of that. “So you don’t run to the IMF when there is nothing wrong with you. The economy has been collapsed. Completely collapsed through theft, through mismanagement and others.” She said the NDP is ready to take up the reins of governance. She added that the party looks good in the next elections especially given the reception it gets at gatherings. The NDP was barred from contesting the last elections as a result of administrative errors during filing of presidential nominations, a situation the wife of Former President John Rawlings says was orchestrated. Ferry breakdown leaves passengers stranded on Volta Lake

0
Ferry accident Hundreds of passengers and scores of vehicles were left stranded on the Volta Lake Tuesday evening when the engine of the ferry they were traveling on ceased working.
The ferry which was from Adawso [Kwahu South], was approaching the landing site at the Ekyeamfrom [Afram Plains South] section of the Volta Lake in the Eastern Region when the incident occurred at about 4:30PM. The journey was the last one for the ferry for the day. About 30 vehicles of all forms, including Metro Mass Transit buses, and about 800 passengers as well as other goods were on board the ferry when it suddenly broke down. ferry Some passengers had to pay GHC4 to boat operators to rescue them from the broken down ferry to the landing site which was just about 50 metres . Others who feared for their lives considering it was late, had to sleep in the ferry until Wednesday when they paid to be rescued. The vehicles and goods were still stranded as at 5:00PM Wednesday. Owners are still waiting for the Volta River Authority, which manages the ferry to bring a towing machinery from Akosombo to get the broken down ferry to the landing site. It is not clear when the towing ferry is likely to arrive. As at 8:00PM Wednesday, it was said to have reached Mpeam Kortes near Ekyeamfrom. The towing process is thus likely to begin Thursday morning, sources told TV3 Meanwhile the broken down of the ferry, which is the only one and the main source of transportation for the people in the area has affected business activities in the area. ferry2 Passengers will now have to travel long distances between Adawso and Ekyeamfrom. School children will now have to risk their lives by using wooden boats which is considered unsafe. Sources say months ago, operators of the ferry detected that one of the engines of the ferry was not working properly but they ignored it. By Yvonne Neequaye|3news.com|Ghana
