Hassan Ayariga’s APC received a provisional certificate from the EC on Wednesday, February 1022
All People’s Congress (APC), a political party founded by 2012 Presidential Candidate Hassan Ayariga, is expected to be handed its final certificate of operation on Friday, April 22.
APC was provisionally certified by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) in February, a few days after its formation. Mr Ayariga established APC after losing the presidential primaries of the People’s National Convention (PNC) to former candidate Dr Edward Nasigre Mahama. The maverick politician had accused PNC of giving him a raw deal in declaring the December results for Dr Mahama. Mr Ayariga has announced that his party will target the youth of Ghana. After securing his provisional certificate, Mr Ayariga insisted that his party is not an Nkrumahist party and will only go into an alliance with any other party that espouses Kwame Nkrumah’s ideology if APC does not win the 2016 elections. CHRAJ to investigate a near fatal military brutality against minor

0
Christopher Bamah The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has indicated its preparedness to thoroughly and swiftly investigate alleged military brutality that has left a minor mentally unstable,  with disturbing scars all over the body and damaged internal organs. The traumatized teenager was accused of stealing a Techno Mobile phone which elicited what many have described as callous and senseless beatings from a group of soldiers in the Northern Region. Christopher Bamah was handcuffed to a mango tree where the soldiers took turns to torture him. The brother of the 16-year-old boy, Richard, told Joy FM the soldiers melted plastic bags until droplets of black molten heat dripped over his body, even on his private parts until he fell unconscious. His sad ordeal lasted for not less than five hours: from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Christopher cannot walk without support, vomits blood with suspected kidney problem as he undergoes excruciating pains daily. He is however responding to treatment at the Nsawam Government Hospital in the Eastern Region. SUE MILITARY Human rights lawyer, Francis Xavier Sosu, who has taken up the case, told Joy News he would petition CHRAJ Monday morning on behalf of the victim’s family, hoping it will “bring perpetrators to book”. He said the petition is just one of the “number of actions in mind to take” against the military. He is also prepared to sue the military. CREEPING INDISCIPLINE Early on, a Deputy Commissioner at CHRAJ, Joseph Whittal condemned the brutality and said his outfit is “ready to welcome a complaint” from the public. He assured that the Commission will “get to the bottom” of the matter and “ make the appropriate recommendations”. Mr. Whittal bemoaned the “creeping indiscipline in some members of the armed forces”, an institution he said used to be disciplined. He noted with pain that even though the Commission may see a glaring human rights violation, it’s unable to commence investigation without it being triggered by a complaint. He therefore encouraged the public or victims to file complaint at CHRAJ when they feel their rights have been violated. NO STRANGER It has emerged that Christopher Bamah is not a stranger to the soldiers who tortured him. He had been an errand boy for the military men at the Kamina Barracks. Meanwhile, Corporal Samson Attuahene, Collins Agyei Boamah and a third person of 6th Battalion of Infantry, who are alleged to have meted out the brutality, are in military detention, the police claimed. Vote NPP if you want progress, prosperity – Akufo-Addo

0
NPP The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is calling on Ghanaians desirous of changing their current circumstances and are yearning for progress and prosperity in their lives to vote him into power.
According to Nana Akufo-Addo, he is of the firm conviction that “Ghanaians want change in this year’s election. Ghanaians are tired of the incompetence. There are no jobs and the nation is drenched with hardships and suffering.” The NPP leader has, therefore, called on all NPP members to get fully involved in the party’s campaign, and extended an invitation to all Ghanaians who want change to “come and join the NPP bandwagon. The elephant is big enough to carry all of us.” He assured that victory for the NPP will be a victory for Ghana, adding that “we are not coming to line our pockets with the riches of the nation. We are coming to do a job for Ghana, so we can bring progress, prosperity, and in particular jobs for the teeming masses of unemployed Ghanaians.” Nana Akufo-Addo made these remarks when the NPP’s recently elected parliamentary candidate for the Ablekuma West constituency, the incumbent MP, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, and a large delegation from the constituency paid a courtesy call on him at his Nima residence on Thursday, April 21. Roni Nicol, a true-blooded NPP man Whilst congratulating Ursula Owusu Ekuful on her victory, and describing her as a “talented MP who has a bright future” and “one of the foremost female voices in our country”, Nana Akufo-Addo also reserved special praised for Mr. Roni Nicol, the other contestant in the April 9 primary. Mr. Nicol, who accompanied the MP to Nana Akufo-Addo’s residence, had, in the aftermath of the primary, pledged his and the unflinching backing of his supporters towards ensuring that Ursula Owusu Ekuful retained the seat for the NPP. “Roni has shown that he is a true-blooded NPP member. He contested the primary and the votes he garnered were very substantial. After the vote, whatever he needed to do to ensure oneness prevailed in the party, he did. He needs to be commended highly. Roni is a first class example to the party of how people should behave,” he said. He continued, “NPP always remembers those who work hard for the party. I am here as flagbearer of the party partly because of the work I did in the past. Roni, this is your first time, there is plenty of opportunity for you in the future. Be what you are – a strong party man. Give Ursula your support, make sure she is returned with an increased majority and NPP people will reward you one day. What I have seen is reassuring and I believe Ablekuma West is on the cusp of something very great.” NPP votes will increase in Ablekuma West Thanking Nana Akufo-Addo for his warm reception, Ursula Owusu Ekuful reassured the NPP flagbearer that “we are determined to make Ablekuma West an example for other constituencies to follow suit. We are going to work hard, and, by His Grace, with an enhanced margin. This year, we in the NPP are not interested in just parliamentary seats. We are interested in a President from the NPP for Ghana. We will do whatever it takes.” She also disclosed that she had taken the initiative towards reconciling members of the party in her constituency who were disgruntled before, during and after the parliamentary primaries. “I am confident that God will bless this initiative and calm every heart that is in pain. We will enter every household and talk to those who had said they were not going to vote, so they change their minds. We will make sure we bring every member on board so they vote for the NPP”, she said. On the 36,975 votes the NPP chalked in 2012 election in the constituency, she pledged a significant increase over the 2012 figure in 2016. This, she explained, will be Ablekuma West’s contribution towards ensuring that Nana Akufo-Addo obtains the 50%+1 vote needed for victory. “We have to win the next election. We are all mindful of that and we will do whatever it takes to ensure that victory is ours. If they are counting the constituencies that contributed to the NPP victory, Ablekuma West will be one of the foremost. We thank you for your support and encouragement over the years,” she concluded. Achimota sch: Lunatics, land guards take over lands, students living in fear

0
file photoStudents of Achimota School are living in fear following activities of land guards and other criminals on the school premises.
The activities of these land guards and criminals have extended onto other lands which belong to the school. These school lands have been encroached upon by persons who claim they acquired the lands legally. Passionately speaking about the frustrations about the land issues, the headmistress madam Beatrice Adom said the situation has made teaching and learning difficult. The school authorities say worshipers and leaders of the prayer camps block access to the school adding that noise emanating from the prayer camps affect effective teaching and learning. She said “sometimes when you go to the compound, you see the lunatics who stray onto the premises and sometimes you see them begging the students for money and we have been saying that please take the prayer camps (in the forest) away. “We are all Christians and some of them are muslims etc but we have to do things the right way. We have to worship God in spirit and in truth not by encroaching on someone’s land.” About 5 dead bodies have been found around the school lands just this academic year and such news creates an atmosphere of fear and panic on campus. The school authorities are linking the increase in dead bodies around the school to the invasion from land guards, unauthorized religious activities, mentally retarded persons and squatters. The headmistress recounted several instances where the mentally challenged have butchered non teaching staffs, teachers and two police personnel saying that some of these land guards wielding machetes attacked a police officer who had to be hospitalized for about six months. The said police officer had been called in due to the activities of some of these land guards and was attacked severely. She said these when the regional leadership of the Ghana Police Service visited the school on a fact finding mission to ascertain the veracity of the complaints. The Accra regional police commander, COP Dr. George Akufo Dampare, in his response, expressed dismay over the alleged murder cases and assured the school authorities of prompt response to their concerns. He said “we’d do whatever it takes so that together we would keep our environments safe. We can assure you that you would have something good to say about us.” By tv3network.com|Ghana Twitter: @NewsyMartin

Election 2016 should be free, fair, peaceful – UK High Commissioner charges Ghana

0
Jon BenjaminThe British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin has underscored the need for the country to stage yet another peaceful and credible election in 2016.
“The police, judiciary, EC (Electoral Commission) and civil society organizations must ensure there is peaceful, fair, credible election where the vulnerable people, those living in the rural areas, disabled and women would have to exercise their right to vote and the UK will be very happy to work with every one that wins,” he stated. The UK High Commissioner was speaking on Onua 95.1FM’s Yen Sempa on the 90th Official Birth Day of Queen Elizabeth II of UK which falls today. Mr. Benjamin said, “I expect the elections to be very vibrant, hard fought and very peaceful because Ghana has a very good track record of a very peaceful and credible election so we must make sure it is peaceful”. He added “it’s in line with this that UK is supporting the process to make it peaceful and we will support whoever Ghana elects as the President and government”. Mr. Benjamin explained that “Ghana would increasingly be a middle income country by 2020 and as such can cater for its election itself and so the UK is helping the country to improve economically that is why we are giving electoral assistance”. On the President’s Accounting to the People Tour, he pointed out that “the [UK] Prime Minister does the same and the Queen does it”. He added that “during election time and democratic country, it is normal for President to show what he has done and it is normal for the opposition to criticize”. He said “many of the things happening in Ghana’s democracy is part of the dynamics in democracy and government should account to the people”.   Story by Kweku Antwi-Otoo | Onua 95.1FM

MoE to takeover training of nurses, health personnel – Mahama discloses

0
file photoPresident John Mahama has endorsed what he described as a “major proposal” where the Ministry of Education would supervise all nursing and health training institutions in the country.
Hitherto, such institutions have been under the purview of the Ministry of Health. However with the worrying spate of unemployed nurses and other health personnel – most of whom are churned out by unaccredited institutions – it has become necessary that such training institutions are moved under the Education Ministry. The decision is currently being considered at the cabinet level, President John Mahama told Ho-based Volta Star Radio on Thursday. The President is in the Volta Region as part of his “Accounting to the People Tour”. “There is one worrying phenomenon that I think we should take note of. There are few nursing training schools, privately established, that do not have accreditation from the National Accreditation Board and yet they are turning out nurses, and that is a worry.” Earlier this year some privately trained nurses were angered by the president’s directive to health institutions to first employ nurses trained by the state before considering others. In a subtle reference to that, President Mahama explained that state trained nurses are bonded because their education was subsidized by government, “so our first obligation is to bonded nurses”. “Like I said private training institutions that are turning out nurses, some of them are accredited, yes that is true, but others are not accredited but they are coming out and saying we are nurses we are unemployed. “That needs to be streamlined that is because nursing training is still under the Ministry of Health. I think that we must move all training institutions under Ministry of Education and if that is done, then the Ministry of Education is better able to supervise accreditation of these institutions.”   Source: Isaac Essel | tv3network.com | Ghana

Queen has been ‘rock of strength for our nation’, says PM

0
file photoThe Queen has been “a rock of strength for our nation” and the Commonwealth, Prime Minister David Cameron has said in a tribute to mark her 90th birthday.
The Prince of Wales has recorded a special radio broadcast for the day, in which he reads an edited passage from William Shakespeare’s Henry VIII. Celebrations get under way later as the Queen takes part in a walkabout in Windsor and lights a symbolic beacon. A photograph of the monarch with young Royal Family members has been released. The image, one of three taken by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz, shows the Queen surrounded by her five great-grandchildren and her two youngest grandchildren. Gun salutes take place around the UK starting from noon, while the prime minister is expected to lead tributes to Britain’s longest serving monarch in the Commons. The reading by Prince Charles, which has been broadcast by the BBC, is an extract from a speech by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer to King Henry VIII after the birth of the future Queen Elizabeth I. In his own tribute later, Mr Cameron is expected to say: “Her Majesty The Queen has lived through some extraordinary times in our world. “From the Second World War to the rations with which she bought the material for her wedding dress. “From presenting the World Cup to England at Wembley in 1966 to man landing on the moon three years later. “From the end of the Cold War to peace in Northern Ireland. “Throughout it all, as the sands of culture shift and the tides of politics ebb and flow, Her Majesty has been steadfast – a rock of strength for our nation, for our Commonwealth and on many occasions for the whole world.” The other Leibovitz photographs show the monarch walking in the grounds of Windsor Castle with four of her dogs and sitting with her daughter, the Princess Royal. The image of the Queen with the young royals was taken in the Green Drawing Room, part of Windsor Castle’s semi-State apartments just after Easter. In it, the Queen – in the tradition of royal portraiture – holds her youngest great-grandchild Princess Charlotte, who is 11 months old, in her arms. Also appearing in the image is two-year-old Prince George, Zara Phillips’s two-year-old daughter Mia Tindall, who holds the Queen’s famous black handbag, and Peter Phillips’s daughters Savannah, five, and three-year-old Isla. The Queen is also joined by the two youngest of her eight grandchildren – the Earl and Countess of Wessex’s children – James, Viscount Severn, eight, and Lady Louise Windsor. Source: BBC

Mahama takes on economists; insists Ghana’s economy strong & resilient

0
President Mahama: "There are many signs that show that the economy is doing much better."President John Dramani Mahama has taken a swipe at some economists over the state of Ghana’s economy, saying they don’t really understand the dynamics.
“With every payment and expenditure we are making, this economy is more resilient and more disciplined because we are using the avenues worth collecting. We are not going to the Central Bank and borrowing money from the Central Bank. “I just want economists to take note of that. And so when you are talking about an economy in crisis, an economy that is self-reliant, is not going to the Central Bank and taking money is more resilient than one that goes to the Central Bank to take money to pay salaries.” President Mahama’s outburst follows a challenge by some economists to an earlier assertion of his that the economy is resilient given its disposition in the face of global crunch. The economists contested the president’s description of Ghana’s economy as resilient, saying it is rather in decline and the president was not painting a good picture of the real situation. But speaking on Ho-based Volta Star on Thursday, April 21 as part of the ‘Accounting to the People’ tour of the Volta Region, President Mahama said figures of the gross domestic product (GDP) over the last three years show that the economy is growing – especially on the macro-economic front. “There are many signs that show that the economy is doing much better. “But if you don’t believe me as your president and you believe outsiders, then let me give you the World Bank’s last update of April 12, 2016.” In quoting the World Bank’s report, President Mahama said the average growth rate projected for Africa is 3.3 per cent. “So, if we are growing at 5.2, then definitely we are growing far above Africa’s average.” ‘Zero extra bank finance’ He said Ghana is still expecting final projection figures, which are likely to see the country’s economy growing by almost 4.0 per cent. He added that currently the country is on zero extra bank financing, a marked departure from the past when governments had a 10 per cent ceiling of financial buffer from the Bank of Ghana. This he said has been enforced as a result of the external credit facility (ECF) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme. By Emmanuel Kwame Amoh|tv3network.com|Ghana Twitter: @kwame_amoh

NPP has no moral justification to talk about corruption – General Mosquito

0
Asiedu Nketia says NDC's record in corruption fight is unmatchedThe General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has taken a swipe at the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying they have no moral authority to accuse President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government of being corrupt.
According to the NDC scribe, NPP’s record of fighting the dreaded canker both in the past and present has been nothing but pathetic. “They claimed they are apostles of democracy but when Paul Afoko the then Chairman raised issues concerning a certain bank account, I am sure you know what happened to him. Can these people claim to be fighting corruption?” General Mosquito as he is affectionately called queried. The flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has described President John Mahama’s fight against corruption as a “sham” and “self-professed”. But President Mahama noted during his last State of the Nation Address in Parliament that under his watch a lot of corruption-related activities have been exposed. According to the President, that demonstrates his administration’s commitment to fighting corruption. But delivering what he termed ‘The Real State of the Nation Address’ at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Nana Addo said all the corruption scandals that had been exposed were not as a result of the President’s effort. Rather, he said the media, civil society organisations and the Minority in Parliament had been responsible for bringing such scandals to the public’s attention. Speaking on news and current affairs programme Ghana Dadwen on Onua FM on Wednesday, April 20 Mr Asiedu Nketiah maintained that President Mahama’s fight against corruption is unmatched. “Just mention one instance of corruption case that the president is not dealing with, unlike Ex-President Kufour who said when you find any of his ministers to be indulging in an act of corruption, you should go and report to the police,” he stated. Mr Asiedu Nketiah said if NPP in opposition is not able to solve issues of corruption, how will they be able to do so in government. How can Nana Addo, he said, supervise suspension of people in the party who exposed corruption and still wants to govern. “When they are chasing people out of the party over corruption, how will they fight it when they have power, master they should not talk about corruption. “Have you heard that someone embezzles money in the NDC and he is covered? Asempa that is the difference between the NDC and the NPP.” By Bright Dzakah|Onua FM|tv3network.com|Ghana
