The main opposition New Patriotic Party is likely to launch its much anticipated manifesto for the 2016 elections in the next two weeks.
The Minority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu disclosed on TV3’s Hot Issues Saturday that the party is looking at August 4 for the launch.
A manifesto is largely a published verbal declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of a political party. Barely four months to a major election, major political parties in the country are yet to outdoor their manifestoes to outline how they intend to govern the nation should they win power.
This has widely been criticized as unacceptable, and Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu concedes.
“I think the proper thing to do is for parties to launch their campaign at least six months before election,” the Member of Parliament for Suame declared.
After a botched attempt to amend a constitutional instrument to hold this year’s elections on November 7, he told host of Hot Issues, Kwesi Pratt that it “may not be the best” for any political party to launch its manifesto beyond August.
“We [the NPP] intend to launch ours (manifesto) very soon. I think we have set ourselves August 4 for it possibly, I am hoping that we will not be in default,” he hinted.
The Minority Leader is however certain the manifestoes of the various parties would not be a departure from what is contained in Ghana’s long term development plan published by the National Development Planning Commission.
