After scrapping nursing students’ allowance, the government has resolved to pay each trainee nurse in the country a monthly abated allowance of GHC150.

A statement issued by the Health Ministry said the decision to pay each of the 34,500 students currently pursuing various levels of health professional training across the country was based on the recommendations of a technical committee set up by the President.

Government scraped the allowance system to invest the monies into infrastructural development at the various training institutions to enable them absolve the huge numbers of students who apply.

But the government has since received backlash, especially from nursing students, for scrapping the allowance which they said was cushioning them.

Following the agitation, a committee was set up to review the issue after which it recommended that the students be paid the abated allowances “with a possibility to migrate them onto the students Loan Scheme.”

“The payment  amount would serve as a bridging mechanism pending the amendment of the Students Loan Trust Act, to enable students in non-tertiary Health Training Institutions access loans to support their education,” the statement explained.

The statement said further information on the new arrangements will be available at the Health Training Institutions Secretariat
