Scores of people have thronged the Nima Police Station in Accra to rally support for controversial Ghanaian pastor, Bishop Obinim who is in Police custody for alleged fraud and assault.

The Police on Tuesday arrested Obinim, who is the founder of International Godsway Church, for defrauding a man of a whopping GHC11.6 million as well as whipping two members of his church before a packed congregation for fornicating.

Bishop Obinim who was taken to the Police CID to assist in investigations regarding the fraud case, had to spend the night in Police cells with one of his pastors who was also arrested in the assault case.

But supporters of Bishop Obinim who are mostly his church members from Accra, Tema and Kumasi, on Wednesday morning trooped in the Nima Police Station.

The people who arrived at the station in buses, sang Christian songs, Onua FM’s Omari Acheampong reports, noting that lawyer for Obinim, Samuel Atta Akyea has also arrived at the Police station.

The crowd at a point surged, prompting the Police to advise them to be calm, he reports

Mr Atta Akyea told our reporter the issue is not something serious and was optimistic of securing a bail for Bishop Obinim.

The lawyer said told our reporter he has seen Bishop Obinim and his junior pastor and they were all fine and smiling.

Let’s be calm

Meanwhile, aide to Bishop Obinim, Joseph Brenya, has appealed to the supporters to remain calm, noting, “Bishop is in good spirit, very strong and healthy”.

“In fact he has asked his followers not to engage in anything that will bring further trouble,” he said.

Disregard falsehood about Obinim

Mr Brenya also asked the public to disregard what he termed as falsehood being spread about Obinim.

“We will urge the general public to ignore and treat as contempt, the negative and falsehood which is being spread around in the section of the media. The fact of the case is that, Bishop reported to the Tema DOVVSU to answer questions related to the flogging of two of his foster children in Church,” he said.

“After that he was transferred to the Police headquarters where we were told someone has filed fresh case against him which is not related to the flogging issue.

“Details of this latest allegation against the man of God will be made known to us this morning,” he added.
