The Media General Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Gary Alfonso, has underscored the importance of media houses that broadcast in their native languages.
Mr. Alfonso says “people like to hear news in their local language because that is what they understand best and it is very effective”.
The MG CEO made the remarks during a familiarization tour of Onua 95.1FM, one of the local radio stations of MG Group. The tour to the MG Radio Office was also to introduce the staff to the new CEO and vice versa.
Media General is the mother company of TV3, Onua 95.1FM, 3FM, all in Accra, Connect 97.1FM in Takoradi in the Western Region and Akoma 87.9FM in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
CEO Alfonso takes over from Mr. Mawuli Hedo who moves to head other major institutions under the conglomerate.
During the tour, Mr. Alfonso met with Onua News Team, Sales Team, Presenters, and management.
The new CEO comes with 29-years experience as a broadcaster haven work in the media since 1987.
Mr. Alfonso said news is an essential part of every radio especially those broadcast in the local dialect and so such station are powerful because the indigenes relate to the station.
He said “as a news person myself, I started radio as news person in 1987 so I will come from time-to-time to share ideas with you”.
Mr. Alfonso was accompanied by the General Manager of MG Radio, Daniel Amartey-Armah, the MG Group Human Resource Manager, Dolly Laryea, the Station Manager of Onua 95.1FM, Kojo Ackaah Kwarteng, Managing Editor for Onua 95.1FM, Joyce Midley, and other management members.
