Persons with disabilities in the country have  appealed to the government to make healthcare free and accessible to their members.

They want the Ministry of Health sign all persons with disabilities onto the National Health Insurance Scheme free of charge to make healthcare free and accessible to their members across the country.

President of Center for Employment of persons with disabilities, Alex Tetteh, grounded the appeal on the fact that most of them are not strong enough to work and have thus become a burden to their families and the society.

He told Onua FM that there is high unemployment rate among their members due to their inability to access education as well as their rejection by the society.

Mr Tetteh observed Ghana has failed to make provision for persons with disabilities, especially regarding supportive equipment like calipers and wheelchairs.

He explained equipment that aid them in their day-to-day activities are scarce and expensive, noting it was unfortunate that it usually takes non-governmental organisations to provide them with such equipment.

He noted that if the Ministry of Health and the government consider their appeal, it will greatly help them and their families because it will ease the enormous pressure they have had to go through on daily basis.

According to him, most persons with disabilities are on the streets begging for alms because they have been neglected by their families and the society in general, hence have no option than to beg for survival.
