Opposition political parties in Northern Region will on August 22 stage a protest march in Tamale to put pressure on government to reduce what they say are high electricity tariffs in the country.
Dubbed: ‘Di Miiya’ which in Dagbani language means “times are hard”, the demonstration will see supporters and members of the New Patriotic Party, People’s National Convention, Convention People’s Party and the All Progressive People’s Party among others joining.
On July 29 this year, opposition political parties in Northern Region asked the government to reduce electricity tariffs by 50% within a week or face protestations b y the people of the Northern Region.
But the government is yet to heed to their demand.
At a news conference in Tamale Monday, the Regional Secretary of NPP, Sule Salifu, said they were not happy that the John Mahama-led government has failed to reduce electricity tariffs, thus worsening the plight of the people.
He said the President’s posture suggest he does not care for the people of the North.
Mr. Salifu said all the political parties are determined to show to the world that the administration of President Mahama cannot continue to take people for granted and treat the people of the Northern Region as if they are only good at voting.
He said it was regrettable and worrying that the region is faced with youth unemployment, adding that government’s withdrawal of allowances for nursing and teacher training colleges has affected the trainees, especially those in the region.
Meanwhile, Regional Chairman of NPP, Bugri Naboo rejected claims that National Democratic Congress in the region is united.
According to him, the NDC’s Northern Regional Chairman and Campaign Coordinator, Sofo Azoka and Martin Hamidu’s refusal to attend to attend the party’s 2016 election campaign launch on Sunday suggests all is not well within the NDC.
