The Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) is calling on government to intervene in what they say authorities blame on the conversion of polytechnics into technical universities.
According to the students, the authorities have introduced “unjustifiable” components in fee structure, making it impossible for most students to continue their education.
“The government must intervene to avert the looming danger accompanied by this unpopular decision of management,” a statement issued on Tuesday, July 26 said.
Signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Union, Elvis Osei Amponsah, the statement explained how student representative councils (SRCs) of the polytechnics have been sidelined in the fee negotiations.
“The current posture being exhibited by authorities of our tertiary institutions under the blanket of academic autonomy makes useless of government’s interventions towards making tertiary education accessible.”
They asked government to intervene immediately to “once again demonstrate its preparedness to save education which is the only and last resort for our development”.
