The President’s National Award for Export Achievement (2019/2020) has been held in Accra with a call on Ghanaians to venture into sustainable exports to boost the economy of Ghana.
Addressing participants at the event held at the Kempinski Gold Coast City Hotel, the CEO of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), Dr. Afua Asabea Asare, said the
“Today, more than ever, our focus on raking in foreign exchange earnings through our non-traditional exports, is a prioritized item—high on the agenda of every discussion bordering on Ghana’s economy.”
She said the Awards Selection Committee, through a rigorous award point system, scored companies that sought to repatriate more than 75% of their foreign exchange higher as a reward for their good corporate citizenship.
She said Ghana’s export earnings for the year 2021 amounted to USD3.3billion, adding that the government is committed to achieving the target set in the National Export Development Strategy (NEDS) which was launched two years ago with the aim of positioning Ghana’s economy as an industrialized one with non-traditional export earnings of USD 25.3 billion by the year 2029.
Delivering a message from the President of Ghana, the Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr. John Kumah, assured the private sector of government’s commitment to improving the conditions that directly affect their business operations.
He called on GEPA to scale up promotional activities on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to encourage more Ghanaians to venture into new opportunities in intra-continental trade.
The President’s National Award for Export Achievement was instituted in 1989, to recognize the efforts of companies that excelled in export trade, as part of an overall plan to stimulate the growth of non-traditional exports.
