Reverend  Prof. Cephas Narh Omenyo has been elected the new moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana to succeed Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey.

Rev. Omenyo was elected in a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ ballot Wednesday after he failed to secure a 70 per cent plus endorsement for his nomination. He managed only 57 percent (116 votes) for his nomination.

His contenders, Rev Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante  and  Rev. Hubert Anim Oppong  managed 29 per cent (60 votes) and 13 per cent (27 votes) respectively for their nomination, thus shifting the selection process into an election.

The two, however, considering their performance, withdrew from the election which ended with 209 delegates (96.76%) voting ‘Yes’ while seven of them (3.2%) voted ‘No’.

This was at the 16th General Assembly of the Church at Abetifi, Kwahu in the Eastern Region.

Profile

As a professor in the study of religion with extensive experience in teaching, research and administration,  Rev. Omenyo is currently the Provost of the College of Education of the University of Ghana.

Rev. Omenyo holds PhD from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. In 2007, he became an associate professor and qualified as a full Professor in 2013.

He was commissioned  and ordained in the Presbyterian Church in 1985 and 1987 respectively.

He worked at Akrofi Christella for five years and was a lecturer at the University of Ghana in 1995.

He was once the Akuafo Hall masters at the University of Ghana, and then a Vice Dean Faculty of Arts and later the Dean of Faculty of Arts of the same university.

Rev. Omenyo was at Victory Presby for 11 years and currently at Grace Presby at West Legon in Accra.

He has served on many boards and committees both at the University of Ghana and in the Presbyterian Church
