Ghana’s Alex Amankwah has joined the country’s 2016 Olympians who have failed to make it beyond their first attempt.

Alex Amankwah on Friday, August 12 raced in Lane 4 in Heat 6 of the Men’s 800m.

He finished second from bottom in a time of 1:50.33 seconds. He could only beat Moroccan Abdelati El Guesse, who did not finish the race after pulling a muscle about 400 meters into the race.

Canadian Brandon McBride won the heat in 1:45.99 sec while Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski  and Irish Mark English joined him as qualifiers into the semi-final.

Defending champion David Rudisha was on the tracks in Heat 3, which he comfortably won in a leading time of 1:45.09 sec.

The shocker came in Heat 5, where 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist Nijel Amos of Botswana placed 7th.
