Rio 2016: Boxer Abdul Wahid loses 56kg bantamweight bout

Sole Ghanaian boxer at the ongoing Olympic Games Abdul Omar Wahid has been eliminated from the championship after losing his 56kg bantamweight bout to Argentine Alberto Ezequiel Melian.

Omar lost all three rounds to the South American on Thursday.

Judges scored the bout 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 on all three cards.

Omar’s defeat sees all Ghanaian athletes participated so far eliminated at their first attempt.

Swimmers Abeiku Jackson and Kaya Forson and judoka Szandra Szogedi also saw the exit at the preliminary stage.

Attention turns to weightlifting and athletics, which begin on Friday, August 12.

Alex Amankwah is expected to race in 800m on Friday. He will be in Lane 4 in Heat 6.

Christian Amoah will also join Group B of the men’s 85kg weightlifting on Friday.
