Rio 2016: Swimmer Abeiku Jackson fails to qualify from Heat 5

Ghana’s Abeiku Gyekye Jackson failed to qualify to the next stage of the 50 meter freestyle swimming event at the Olympics after clocking 24.30 sec in Heat 5 on Thursday.

The young swimmer was making his Olympic debut as Ghana’s first male swimmer in the quadrennial multi-sport event.

Abeiku Jackson’s time saw him place 6th in his heat. He was thus ranked 55th, beating 30 other participants. He, however, secured a personal best time.

Senegal’s Abdul Khadre Mbaye Niane won Heat 5 in 23.66 seconds but also failed to make it to the next round.

Jackson’s showing means all Ghanaian participants competed at Rio so far have been eliminated.

Already, swimmer Kaya Adwoa Forson and judoka Szandra Szogedi are out of the Olympics.

Boxer Abdul Omar will later on Thursday, August 11 take on Argentine Alberto Melian in the Round of 32 in the men’s 56kg bantam weight division.

Athletics begins on Friday.
