The Royal Bank has announced a GH¢20,000 package for the 2nd edition of the annual Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup, which is slated for July 9 in Accra.
Announcing the package at a press conference in Accra to launch the 2nd edition of the tournament, the Senior Vice President of The Royal Bank in charge of Marketing, Research and Corporate Affair, Dr Kwame Baah-Nuako, said the bank’s charitable wing, The Royal Bank Foundation, shares in the values of the competition, which is promoting peace, unity and discipline among Zongo communities and beyond, hence their partnership and support for the 2nd edition.
“The Royal Bank Foundation is committed to community development and we were convinced by the values of this competition which seeks to bring these communities together to promote peace, unity and discipline,” said Dr Baah-Nuako.
“We were attracted to the event because of the peace message. It is worst to have no peace in a country and we in the financial sector are interested in peace so that our business would thrive.”
He urged all participating communities to abide by the values of the competition and also advised youth from these communities and beyond not to allow themselves to be used for election-related violence before, during and after the 2016 elections.
The Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup, organised by Crisp Communications under the auspices of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, will see 12 Zongo communities vie for the coveted trophy on July 9 as part of the Eid Fitr celebrations.
According to the coordinator of the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup, the teams were increased from last year’s 8 to 12 this year due to requests from many communities to be part.
Dr Sheikh Yunus Mohammed, who represented the Chief Imam, urged organisers to consider expanding the competition to accommodate more communities.
Gambian entrepreneur, HRH Prince Ebrahim Sanyang, Chairman Royal Africa Holdings, commended organisers of the competition for instituting such a competition to bring together youth from the Zongo communities.
He pledged to support this year’s edition with GH¢10,000.
At the launch to endorse the tournament on behalf of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) President was Miss Leanier Addy, a member of the GFA Executive Committee.
Former Black Stars player and General Secretary of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana, Tony Baffoe, was also there to offer his support.
He commended Royal Bank for their support, and the organisers for the initiative.
The 12 Zongo communities taking part in the competition are: Nima, Mamobi, Ashaiman, Madina, Accra New Town, Alajo, Darkuman, New Fadama, Tudu, Shukura, Nsawam Zongo, and Sabon Zongo.
