The Salaga Government Hospital in the Northern Region turned away patients seeking medical attention at the facility on Thursday September, 15 2016.

This comes on the heels of an internal strike declared by the hospital authorities Sunday September 11, 2016 following an alleged assault on a nurse called Aliya by one Maria at the facility.

About seven hours of meeting on Wednesday September 14, 2016 involving the District Security Council, Leadership of the Gonja Land Youth Association and the Salaga Government Hospital to put the issue to rest ended inconclusively. Officials at the facility insisted on the arrest of Maria, a resident of Salaga.

Maria had wanted to visit a relative on admission at about 11:00 but was denied entry because it was outside the visiting hours, but she would not go away until she sees the patient. Her insistence resulted in an attack on the hospital staff.

Visiting hours at the Salaga Government hospital in the morning is from 05:00am-06:00am and in the evening 4:30-06:00pm.

The incident was reported to the Medical Superintendent Dr Muhammed Sherrif Halik who in turn reported the case to the East Gonja District Police.

Maria is yet to be apprehended by the police four days after the incident, leading to a sit down strike declared by the hospital until the attacker is made to face the full rigour of the law.

According to officials of the hospital, this is not the first time Maria has attacked somebody there. They recalled an attack on Dr Sheriff some weeks ago which was treated with no seriousness.
