The Salvation Army Ghana, an international Christian movement, is set to establish a specialized University in Music Education at Agona in the Sekyere South District of Ashanti Region.

The University, when completed, would be the second to be established in West Africa by the organization.

The traditional authorities at Agona, together with the Sekyere South District Assembly, has handed a 10.2 acre land for the University project to commerce.

At the ceremony to hand-over the property, Chairman of the steering committee of the proposed university, Professor Charles Antwi-Bosiako, stated that the University will focus on expanding music education, in addition to nursing, education, business and theology courses.

“We are going to incorporate our education with music. A lot of musicians are groomed in the country; we want to build a university where music education will be paramount so that all the musicians that are grooming up will direct their attention here and develop their capacity,” he said.

The Territorial Commander of the Salvation Army Ghana Territory, Colonel Joseph Lukau, said the principal objective of the Movement is the advancement of the Christian religion and education as well as poverty relief and other charitable activities which are beneficial to society.

He noted that, the time has come for the church to establish a university to provide tertiary education to the community.

“The Salvation Army, since its existence in Ghana in the year 1922, has established 1st and 2nd Cycle institutions widely across Ghana and the time is now for us to move our education to the next level, thus, the need for a University to be established,” said Colonel Joseph Lukau.

He assured the church will not relent on its efforts to develop the University to an enviable standard.

“We are poised to establish a University as the highest pinnacle to our educational structure, which will be part of our achievements to celebrate our Centenary Anniversary in 2022, besides the development and growth of the district, the nation and human kind in general,” he said.

District Chief Executive for Sekyere South, Edward Kusi Ayarkwah, has pledged the assembly’s support towards the successful completion of the university.
