St John’s 1 & 2 Primary School at Accra Newtown was on Monday, June 20 reopened for teaching and learning amidst tight security.
Officers of the Ghana Police Service and Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) task force were deployed to the school to provide security.
“We will continue to provide security here as long as we need it,” stressed AMA Chief Executive Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije on Monday.
He further stated that “when the dust settles down, the appropriate measures will be put in place”.
The school was closed down after some thugs attacked teachers over sanctions meted out to a primary pupil.
Videos of the attack went viral on social media.
Dr Vanderpuije says appropriate measures will be taken if the pupil is found to have had a hand in the attack.
Only the Class Six teacher, a news report on TV3’s News 360, showed up on the reopening day though more than half of the student population reported.
Meanwhile, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) says a mass transfer of the teachers attacked should be effected for a new set of teachers to handle teaching and learning at the school.
Greater Accra Region Secretary for the Association Le Roy Levi Nara said the security at the school is not enough.
“That protection is just for the school premises during their working hours.
“The police are not going to escort the teachers home, neither are they going to escort them from their houses to the school, that is where the danger lies.”
