The threats were issued on the eve of the 34th anniversary of the ‘Martyrs of the Rule of Law’

The three persons who issued what was considered death threats to the judges of the Supreme Court on Accra-based radio station are to be sentenced on July 27 after the Court found them guilty of contempt.

Two panellists- Alistair Tairo Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn- and a host of Pampaso  on Montie FM, Salifu Maase, also known as Mugabe, as well as owners of the station were cited for contempt by the court on July 5.

Ahead of the sentencing, the court has given them self-recognisance bail.

The panellists had threatened to assassinate the justices of the apex court of Ghana if their ruling in the Abu Ramadan/Evans Nimako case does not favour the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC).

But after hearing from them for the first time on Tuesday, July 12, the five justices of the Supreme Court scheduled Monday, July 18 to meet the owners of the radio station as well.

Management of the station as well as the two panellists have apologised for the comments while the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) has also downplayed the threats of the two.

Though the recording was played in court on Monday, the presiding judge Justice Sophia Akuffo – who replaced Chief Justice Theodora Wood after she recused herself – adjourned the case to Wednesday, July 27 for ruling.

‘Kpokpogbligbli’

Mr Nelson had blamed his vituperation on disease ‘kpokpogbligbli’, which he told the court he has been suffering.

He pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy.

The owners also prayed for mercy, expressing remorse about the whole incident.

The Court, which had another judge – Baffoe Bonney – recusing himself due to his relationship with one of the owners, found the contemnors guilty and adjourned the case for final ruling.
