Some drivers unions in Accra are planning a sit down strike on Monday following what they claim to be a government’s decision to relocate some of their stations.

Addressing a press conference in Accra, Francis Appiah the PRO of the unions said city authorities have threatened to remove commercial drivers at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to the new Achimota Bus Terminal while drivers operating from Tema Station in Accra are to be re-located to the Hearts Park.

The 37 Military station will also be moved to Kawukudi Park near Maamobi.

According to him, their relocation has to do with the impending roll-out of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRTS) where some lanes would be dedicated to special buses facility the BRTS.

They gave government ultimatum which elapsed on Friday. They said if government fails to reverse its decision with regards to the relocation, they will embark on a nationwide strike.

“The Ghana Concerned Drivers Association will go on nationwide strike action on Monday, September 19th 2016. This impending action has become necessary, following what we consider events inimical of our work as commercial drivers and as members of the Ghana Committed Drivers Association.”

Another concern they raised was the operation of a transport operator, Uber Transport Company LTD, whose operation they say is threatening to collapse their business.
