Threat against judges: Interior Minister invited to Judicial Council’s emergency meeting

The Judicial Council has held an emergency meeting over the recent threats spued on Accra-based Montie FM against the Supreme Court judges.

Two of the panellists – Alistair Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn – were on record to have threatened to murder the Supreme Court justices handling the case on the voters’ register.

But the emergency meeting, which also had in attendance the Attorney General, deplored the statements as an “unwarranted attack on the judiciary and an explicit threat on the lives of judges”.

A statement issued after the meeting said the Minister of Interior, Prosper Bani, was invited.

Both Mr Bani and Minister of Justice Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong dissociated the government and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from the statements made by the two – who have been picked up by the Bureau of National Investigations – and further assured of personal security and protection on the judges.

“The Judicial Council therefore advises all members of the judiciary to be calm and unruffled in the discharge of their judicial responsibilities.”

It said a collaborative effort will be put in place to ensure that the assurances are duly made to work.
