Three killed in robbers-Police shootout in Kumasi

A gun battle between the Police and some suspected armed robbers who attempted to rob a house at Asuoyeboah near the SSNIT Flats in Kumasi Monday night has led to the death of three of the robbers.

Two other suspects, who the Police believe sustained gun wounds, managed to escape in a taxi which they were using for their operation. The Police has asked hospital authorities to look out for anyone who show up with gunshot wounds.

The deceased are believed to be behind those who robbed and killed a taxi driver on the Obuasi-Jacobu road in the Ashanti Region last Thursday. The driver who was conveying a sick Chinese miner to a hospital when the incident happened.

According to the Police, a manhunt was launched for their arrest, and at about 10:00pm Monday, they received information that a group of robbers were planning to rob a house at Asuoyeboah to which they responded swiftly.

The Police say at the area, they saw a group of persons arrive in a taxi at the scene. The Police signaled the taxi to stop but the driver ignored and sped off amidst firing of gunshots at the Police officers who also responded.

The Police pursued the cab and sensing danger, three of the suspects alighted and ran into the bush while firing. The Police returned fire which hit the three killing them instantly.

A search on them revealed two locally manufacture pistols, five empty cartridges, two mobile phones, and a knife among other items.

“We will leave no stone unturned in our quest to fight crime in this region. We assure residents of Ashanti region we are committed and ready to fight criminals boot for boot anytime, any day, and place,” Ashanti Region Deputy Commander of Police, ACP Ampofo Duku told journalists Tuesday

ACP Ampofo Duku said the Command has intensified its strategy in crime fighting and has arrested and prosecuted not less than 10 suspected robbers in July alone.
