Bolgatanga, July 1, GNA – The Bolgatanga Municipal office of Environment and Sanitation in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) have undertaken a cleaning exercise to rid choked drains and gutters of filth in the Bolgatanga Township.
Last month, prior to the rains, the environment, Sanitation Office and Zoomlion Ghana limited on separate missions also cleaned large drains around the O.A lorry station and gutters along with the Municipal Police station, and Bolgatanga-Tamale Highway.
The ongoing exercise according to the Environment and Sanitation Office will serve as part of the implementation of ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ and the sensitization of the general public to ensure they took responsibility to clean their various surroundings.
Mr Evans Bornaah, the Municipal Officer of Environmental and Sanitation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said a meeting had been held earlier with members of the GPRTU at the station, to sensitize them on the need to take cleaning their surroundings serious, in line with the Operation Clean Your Frontage programme.
Whilst the Environment and Sanitation Staff mobilized for the cleaning and desilting of the lorry parks and drains, Zoomlion Ghana cleaned and emptied refuse containers at both the old and new Bolgatanga Markets.
Mr Bornaah said the exercise also satisfied a mandate that calls for the removal of structures that blocked waterways as the rains increased, to ensure easy flow of water.
Mr Bornaah said the cleaning carried out at the main Bolgatanga lorry park, involved emptying of refuse that prevented the flow of water in the gutters.
Meanwhile, the Municipal District Chief Executive Officer, Mr Rex Asanga who responded to sanitation issues in a radio discussion bemoaned the sanitation conditions of the area and reiterated the Assembly’s resolve to slap spot fines on culprits whose frontage and surroundings are dirty.
