The Tamale Circuit Court on Wednesday, September 7 remanded two brothers namely Nuhu Yakubu and Dawuda into prison custody for snatching a motorbike from a resident in the Central Gonja District of the Northern Region.
The suspects, who pleaded guilty to the offence in court but asked the court to tamper justice with mercy, are scheduled to reappear on September 20, 2016.
The two were charged with conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.
Nuhu Yakubu and Dawuda Yakubu, both 20 years, were arrested by the Central Gonja District Police in the district capital of Buipe after an intelligence.
They have also been named among a gang that has been terrorizing residents for some time especially during market days.
A distress call led the police to the robbery scene on the Fufulso-Sawla junction but the suspects fled before the police could reach the scene.
A tip-off same day revealed the suspects were heading to Tamale at about 1:00pm and a quick response by putting a call through to their counterpart for their arrest led to the arrest of the duo at the Buipe toll booth.
The police upon the arrest retrieved a locally manufactured pistol, ammunition, talisman and a driver’s license belonging to one of the armed robbers.
Central Gonja District Police Commander DSP Kingsley Owusu Antwi, confirmed the arrest to TV3 and added that armed robbery activities are mostly carried out on the Kintampo-Fufulso junction stretch of the Tamale-Kumasi highway.
ASP Owusu Antwi applauded residents for providing intelligence leading to the arrest of the suspects.
He, however, cautioned residents never to take the laws into their own hands by lynching suspects but should hand them over to the police for the necessary proceedings.
