Ghanaian dancehall music icon, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale has disclosed that his time in jail felt like home and more of a vacation, rather than a punishment.
In a recent interview on TV3’s ‘Showbiz 360’ with Giovanni Caleb, the award-winning artist shared his experience behind bars, stating that it didn’t really humble him because he felt like he was at home.
“You see, here in Ghana, we do not sacrifice to help the country. It didn’t really humble me because when I went to jail, I was actually feeling like I was at home,” he said.
According to ‘My Level’ hitmaker, there were quite a number of prisoners who were happy to see him and he was treated with respect and dignity during his stay.
“There were quite a number of people there, some for over 30 years, that wanted to see Shatta Wale. Some fetch water for me and others give me their food. The way I was treated on the streets, is the same treatment I got in the cells,” he stated.
He added that the experience in jail had no effect on his music career since he was able to release more hit songs after his bail.
“It wasn’t like they sent me to a place to suffer; when I went there, it was like a vacation. Nobody goes to jail and comes back with the right frame of mind but I came back and released ‘On God’, ‘JJC’ and a whole lot”.
Two years ago, Shatta Wale was arrested and later sent to the Ankaful Medium Prison in the Central Region to spend one week on remand after he faked being shot, with the help of his PRO named Kojo Owusu Koranteng, also known as Nana Dope and another person known Eric Venator, alias Gangee.
Later, the police said preliminary investigations has reveal that the widely reported gunshot attack on Shatta Wale on Monday, October 18, 2021 was a hoax.
