The Ghana Blind Union (GBU) has threatened to gather thousands of visually impaired in the country to demonstrate against the government’s delay in the passage of the Marrakesh Treaty.
The treaty which was passed about three years ago was to enable the government provide Braille for visually impaired to access information.
It requires countries which ratify the treaty to have excerpts of the domestic copyright law for visually impaired. It is also to enable the visually impaired to have access to reading materials.
But after three years, none of these policies in the treaty has been adhered to by the Ghana government.
A member of the Ghana Blind Union, Juliana Afia Maumud speaking to Onua News stressed that the passage of the treaty was long overdue.
Presenting a petition to the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Madam Afia Maumud said Ghana would witness this extraordinary demonstration of the century because the union will march to every government office, ministries and departments to press home their demands.
The Acting Chief Director at the Attorney-General’s Department, Ahmed Sulemana receiving the petition said his outfit has been working on it and assured that it would be ready before December this year.
The group had early on petitioned the Gender, Children and Social Protection Ministry. The petition was received by the sector Minister, Nana Oye Lithur.
She also promised a favourable response before election.
