The man who refereed Wales’ Euro 2016 semi-final against Portugal is a multi-millionaire.
Swedish official Jonas Eriksson took charge of the clash, having been a FIFA referee since 2002, report Wales Online.

However, he only does the job for fun.

The 42-year-old has been a referee since 1994 and is a multi-millionaire after selling a stake in a sports media rights agency in 2007 for a reported £6 million.

The firm is based primarily in Stockholm, but has offices around Europe, as well as in the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, distributing television rights worldwide to TV stations and media companies.

Eriksson also took charge of the Europa League final between Liverpool and Sevilla in May.
Referee Jonas Eriksson 2He told UEFA’s website: “I love football and I love to referee. Every week when I step out onto the grass I’m doing what I love most.

“I’ve had a fantastic life as a businessman as well, but since 2011 I’ve dedicated myself to being a professional referee and I’m having the time of my life.”

Former Premier League referee Howard Webb wrote in The Times: “He’s become known as the millionaire referee after he sold shares in a Swedish media business and that means he does not do it because he needs the money but because he loves the game and the job.

“Even in the competitive world of elite refereeing you wouldn’t hear any backbiting about Jonas – he’s universally liked and respected.”
