Deputy Minister of Finance, Mona Quartey has allayed fears of public sector workers whom she said are too worried to discharge their duties because of sanctions prescribed under the Public Financial Management Act 921.

The Act which happens to be one of Finance Minister Seth Terkper’s major legacies seeks to regulate and maintain prudent management with fiscal discipline.

Some workers are worried that some of the sanctions are too rigid. They are concerned that the law which appears draconian to them could scare some workers who would be extra cautious in order not to fall foul of the law.

At a media briefing at the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday on the Public Financial Management, the Deputy Minister said the sanctions are essential to rather guide people to execute their responsibilities well.

The sanctions which include maximum prison sentence of 5 years and minimum 6 months among others are there for those who deliberately misappropriate public funds, Mona Quartey explained.
