You cannot live in Kumasi and be a successful musician – Dada KD

Highlife musician, Dada KD has said any musician who wants to live and build his career in Kumasi cannot be successful.

He made this statement during a one on one interview with Kwasi Aboagye Live on Facebook on Sunday.

According to Dada KD, his observation of musicians who practice their craft in Kumasi has shown that things don’t go well for them adding that rapper Okyeame Kwame was smart enough to leave Kumasi for Accra to continue his journey as a musician.

“When you go to Kumasi, There’s a proverb which says ‘obrefo ento obrefo adee which literally means, someone who is suffering is not obliged to help another man.

“If you’re a musician or even an actor or actress and you want to live your life in Kumasi and make it, it’ll be difficult for you,” he said.

When asked by host Kwasi Aboagye to explain why it is like that Dada KD explained that, “It’s like we’re closer to each other in Kumasi. We’re all like one family so when you’re doing a show, instead of your people coming to support you, they’ll say ‘oh Dada KD is my brother and I’ve been seeing him around.’”

The highlife musician, who was born and bred in Kumasi, used legendary Charles Amoah as an example saying the veteran also touched on this same issue sometime ago and suffered to get shows to play.

Dada KD dramatically stated that he would’ve poisoned himself if he still lived in Kumasi.

“In Kumasi, one can even walk from Ashtown to Bantama unlike Accra, so someone can just walk up to you and say ‘hey bro are back, when are you leaving’?

“You see, Kumasi is a difficult place for a creative person to live and make it so imagine if I still lived in Kumasi, by now I would have poisoned myself,” he claimed.

The “Fathia Fata Nkrumah” hitmaker recounted that there was a time when he, Okyeame Kwame and three other musicians tried to put a show together at Golden Tulip in Kumasi but the attendance was so poor.

He said that incident is what made Okyeame Kwame and he decided to relocate to Accra.

Dada KD urged Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to intervene in the matter.
