President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to a total of 896 prisoners.

A Flagstaff House release gave a breakdown of the freed prisoners as follows:

1. 813 first offenders
2. 16 seriously ill
3. 63 aged 70 years and above
4. 1 double amputee
5. 3 on death row life imprisonment

The prisoners were freed in commemoration of the 56^th Republic Day celebration on July 1.
