Multiple award-winning Ghanaian rapper Michael Owusu Addo famously known as Sarkodie has revealed that he still pays his former label signees, Strongman and Akwaboah, even though they are no longer signed to his label, Sarkcess Music.
In an interview with Angela Yee on the “Way Up Show” in New York City, Sarkodie said that he felt a deep sense of empathy for his former signees and wanted to give them what he would have wanted for himself if he had been in their position.
“I feel for them and I feel like I’ll like to give them what I would want if I had the same situation,” he said.
Sarkodie explained that he offered each of his former signees a 50/50 split of the profits from their music, even though he was the sole financier of their careers. This is a rare arrangement in the music industry, where labels typically take a much larger share of the profits.
”Probably I was one of the only labels that would give 50/50 percentage while I was putting in the money because that’s what I would ever love for myself,” he said.
The ‘Country Side’ hitmaker also said that his label continues to support his former signees even after they have left.
“All my artistes had a good run with me, and they still get paid though they’re not on my label,” he added.
