Rapper Amerado’s track “Kwaku Ananse” has been nominated in the Most Popular Song of the Year category at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).
After the nominations were unveiled on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Center (AICC), several artists expressed disappointment as their expected hit songs were absent from certain categories. Amerado, born Derrick Sarfo Kantanka, openly aired his concerns, especially regarding his overlooked track ‘Kwaku Ananse,’ despite the remix receiving a nomination. He turned to social media, urging the TGMA board for clarification.
In response, the award scheme’s board granted a one-week grace period for artists to voice their concerns. During this time, they received various submissions from the industry community, including Amerado. However, following a thorough evaluation, the board confirmed that there were no errors or omissions in the nominations list, except for two categories.
Upon thorough review of all submissions, the board confirms the absence of errors or omissions in the nominations list, except for two categories. Initially categorized as a featured work, ‘Lonely Road’ by O’Kenneth & Xlim Kid was later clarified by the artists’ management as a joint project, prompting the board to correct the nomination to reflect its accurate category.
Furthermore, the board reconsidered and nominated Amerado’s ‘Kwaku Ananse’ remix in the Best Highlife Song category instead of the original version, impacting its consideration for Most Popular Song of the Year. However, upon further review, the original version met the criteria and has consequently been nominated in the Most Popular Song of the Year category.
In a press statement dated April 15, 2024, the board reiterated its commitment to fairness in the Telecel Ghana Music Awards scheme.
