Former President of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association, Alex Tweneboah, has been handed a two-year jail term for engaging in SIM box fraud.

He has also been ordered by the Accra Commercial Court to pay GHC 72,000 in fines, TV3’s Godfred Tanam reported from the court Thursday morning. He will serve two more years should he fail to pay the fine.

This was after the court found  him guilty on charges of providing electronic communication equipment without lawful authority, possessing illegal device and knowingly obstructing and interfering with sending, transmission, delivery and reception of communication.

Mr Tweneboah was arrested on January 15,2015 by a joint task force made up of Police at a residence at Batsona in Accra where one Sim box with a 64-slot Sim server, 4G Internet modem, one laptop computer and mini antennas were seized.

The court ordered that the 64 port sim box be destroyed and the laptop computers used to operate the system should be donated to a deprived school to be identified by the National Communications Authority, Godfred reported

A caretaker in the house mentioned Dr Tweneboah as the owner , who upon interrogation told the Police that he was introduced to the SIM box fraud because his business was dwindling due to harsh economic conditions in the country.

According to the prosecution, his operation caused the state about 919,000 dollars.
