The Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Paul Apreku Twum-Barimah says calls by some stakeholders within the petroleum industry for the energy and lands ministers to appear before Parliament to further explain the gold-for-oil policy is a step in the right direction.
The two sector ministers include Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh and Samuel Abu Jinapor.
The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that the gold -for oil policy will reduce the pressure on forex and also present the country with cheaper fuel.
Though the country has taken delivery of its first consignment of the gold-for-oil deal reached with the United Arab Emirates, the deal has received backlash from some stakeholders in the industry.
In a Citi News interview, Mr. Twum-Barimah says the hearing from the sector ministers will help MPs better educate their constituents about the policy.
“So we need to up our engagement processes so that we will be able to get the people to appreciate and understand exactly what this gold-for-oil process is about. Of course, the representatives of the people would want to understand the processes and share them with their constituents, it may be a good course. It’s a call I will not throw it away, it’s something that should be considered. The sector ministers, lands and energy, may give us further explanation, I think it is a good call,” MP for Dormaa East said.
