The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress were among several big shots who thronged Parliament Thursday as the Minority begins process that could lead to the impeachment of President John Mahama.
The president has been accused of accepting a gift – Ford Expedition – from a Burkinabe contractor, which the opposition claimed was unethical and are reading legal implications into its acceptance.
In a motion dated August 3, 2016, the Minority requested that Parliament recalled from recess to constitute a special Parliamentary Committee to investigate the following:
- Whether the President of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama received a Ford Expedition Vehicle from a Burkinabe Contractor.
- Whether the Ford Expedition Vehicle received by the President infringes any law of Ghana
- Whether the Ford Expedition Vehicle donated to the President infringes his own code of conduct.
- Any other matter relevant to the above subject.
The Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho subsequently summoned the 275 Members of Parliament to convene today September 1, 2016 to consider the motion signed by the Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
But the Majority in parliament told the media the recall of parliamentarians smack of mischief.
As at Thursday 10am only few MPs had showed up, mainly from the Minority side.
However, a number of government officials who are not legislators, curious about the outcome of today’s gathering took time off their busy schedules to be in Parliament.
They included the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Minister of Communications Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.
They were seen engaging the Minority in hearty chats to perhaps water down their threat.
