President John Dramani Mahama says the processes leading up to the December 7 elections and thereafter will cement Ghana’s position as a beacon of democracy in Africa.

He says the processes “before, during and after will mark a further consolidation of Ghana’s credentials as a leading world democracy”.

President Mahama made this known on Wednesday, September 21, when he addressed the UN General Assembly.

His address touched on a number of issues including efforts being made by Ghana to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the need for financial aid to some member countries to do same and the composition of the UN Security Council apropos Africa.

“I am happy to inform you, Mr President, that Ghana has begun work in earnest to implement the SDGs.

“We have put into place the necessary national structures that will ensure that the policies and measures taken in that regard fall in line with our 40-year development plan currently being formulated.”

President Mahama touted Ghana’s democracy as leading in Africa and announced to the Assembly that his country will go to the polls in December.

He expressed optimism that the elections will further consolidate Ghana’s disposition in that area, having held six successive elections in the past.
