The primary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Manhyia North Constituency was temporarily held up after private security personnel Delta Force clashed with the police.

TV3’s correspondent reports that confusion erupted following protests over the eligibility of the voters’ register, which has been a bone of contention in the inability of the constituency to hold elections.

The police, TV3’s William Evans Nkum said, fired warning shots at the Longford Hotel to disperse trouble makers.

But addressing the media after the disruption, Airport Police District Commander Superintendent James Annor said the problems have been party-related because some of the members raised concerns.

He said he had to meet the party’s leadership, who promised to ensure peaceful polls, solving the problem.

SP Annor said one person was arrested and is being held in police custody for preventing some delegates from voting anytime their names are mentioned.

He said not even earlier warnings from him could dissuade the man from his act.

On the firing of the warning shots, the senior police officer said his Chief Inspector had resorted to it after he got indication that there was a possibility of the ballot box being taken away.

“So he gave the warning shot to bring the situation down.”

SP Annor said the the police are in control and will not call for reinforcement.

The polls ended with incumbent Member of Parliament Collins Owusu Amankwaah retaining his candidature for the 2016 parliamentary elections.

He beat Kwaku Konadu and Frank Osei Bamfo.
