STL does not transmit election results – EC insists

0
file photoThe Electoral Commission of Ghana has insisted that Israeli firm Superlock Technologies Limited (STL) has never transmitted results of elections in Ghana contrary to suspicions that they do so.
The suspicions – mostly within opposition political parties – were fuelled by a recent statement issued by the Ministry of Interior that STL has been contracted by the EC to transmit election results. On the sidelines of a workshop for journalists on Tuesday, April 12, a Deputy Commissioner at the EC, Georgina Opoku Amankwaa, said: “Transmission of result was never the work of STL and Dr Afari Gyan, the former Chairman of the Commission, had always been emphatic on this fact.” She pointed out that the Commission has neither come out to dismiss what Dr Gyan said in 2012 about the fact that the Commission is not even conducting electronic transmission of results. “So whatever is coming out,” Mrs Opoku Amankwaa further noted, “that is why the Commission has not spoken because we have given our position and it has been made clear.” She said the ICT-firm only helped the EC secure the biometric verification machines. “So as I speak, they are the people who are working on these things…it is they who service it and it is they who programme it.” Source: tv3network.com|Ghana

Chief Imam’s Office criticizes T. B. Joshua’s mode of delivering prophecy

0
Prophet T.B. JoshuaThe office of the National Chief Imam has criticized the attitude of the founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Nigeria, Prophet TB Joshua, who declared that there will be terrorist attacks in Ghana and Nigeria between Thursdays and Saturdays this month. Although the Office says it is not downplaying the revelation, the approach adopted by the prophet to announce the attack, which it believes has created fear and panic in the country.
Prophet TB Joshua had declared during a Church service, which was beamed live on Emmanuel TV on Sunday: “I see Thursday, Friday. Pray for these two nations – Nigeria and Ghana – over gathering in any way; over attack. I am seeing attack and that will be in a foreign way. The attack will come not in a local way. So please open your lips and pray for these two nations for protection.” But the Administrator of the Chief Imam’s Office, Alhaji Adam Musa Abubakar told Onua FM’s Yen Sempa Tuesday that “there are elders and authorities in the country so Prophet T. B. Joshua should have [first] notified them”. He explained, “announcing it through TV during a church service has created fear and panic in the country. I was in town yesterday and everyone is panicked over the issue”. Alhaji Abubakar advised that “pastors should notify authorities such as the security services of such threats to avert fear and panic among the citizens”. The Chief Imam’s administrator called on Muslims and Ghanaians to pray for the nation for God to avert such calamity. “We always pray for Ghana. Chief Imam always prays for Ghana and we will not deny prophecy so we will continue praying for God’s power to protect the nation”. Alhaji Abubakar said “all beliefs are not the same but the 96-years Chief Imam believes with prayer the prophecy may be averted”.   Story by Kweku Antwi-Otoo / Onua FM

Confiscation of Nayele’s ‘coke’ property to be challenged

0
file photoThe mother of Nayele Ametefe has initiated moves to prevent the state from confiscating one of the jailed drug baron’s properties at East Legon in Accra.
According to her, the said property belonged to her and not her daughter [Nayele]. An Accra High Court last Wednesday ordered the confiscation of properties of Nayele Ametefe also known Ruby Adu-Gyamfi. She is currently serving an eight years, eight months jail sentence in the United Kingdom. The assets the Accra High Court asked the state to confiscate include the Night Angels Enterprise on the Dzorwulu Motorway Extension in Accra. Six different bank accounts of the convict with the Fidelity Bank and the East Legon house. The Ghanaian Times newspaper in its Monday April 11, 2016 edition reported that, the court, presided over by Justice Georgina Mensah-Datsa asked Nayele’s mother to appear before the court on April 27 to defend her position with the relevant documents. According to the newspaper, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB), in charge of Enforcement and Control, Mr. Richard Nii Lante Blankson, said his outfit was taking steps to serve Nayele with the court ruling. Mr Blankson however noted that some people were claiming ownership of some of the buildings at Pease, Kuntunase in the Ashanti Region, East Legon and Dzorwulu. He said lawyers of the said people have presented some documents indicating that they owned the buildings, which, they said, were rented by the convict. According to Mr Blankson, the court also ordered that Fidelity Bank release the amounts in the bank accounts, with the accrued interest to NACOB so that it could enforce the court’s orders as to the utilisation of the monies. Nayele, was arrested on November 10, 2014 at the Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom by officers of the UK Border Force with 12.5 kg of cocaine worth $5million in her hand luggage. The 33-year-old who pleaded guilty to carrying 12 kilos of cocaine to the United Kingdom was sentenced on her own plea by the Isleworth Crown Court in London in January 2015. The sentence was discounted because of her early guilty plea. Prosecutors said the cocaine carried by Nayele had a purity of 78% and a street value of 1.872 million Pounds. The prosecutors told the court Nayele had $23,000 and an additional 6,000 Pounds in her handbag when she was arrested. The money was payment for her courier services. Source Graphic Online

Somalia executes al-Shabab journalist

file photoA Somali journalist who helped al-Shabab kill five fellow reporters has been executed by firing squad.
Hassan Hanafi, once a respected broadcaster, was sentenced to death last month by a military court in the capital, Mogadishu. He assisted the Islamist militant group by identifying possible targets amongst journalists between 2007 and 2011. He joined its armed wing after working for Radio Andalus, al-Shabab’s mouthpiece in Somalia. More than 25 journalists have been murdered in Somalia since 2007, the Committee to Protect Journalists says. While he was working for al-Shabab, Hanafi would call up journalists and threaten them with death if they refused to join the militant group, the BBC Somali’s Mohammud Ali says. Al-Shabab frequently stages attacks in Mogadishu and other cities, and still controls many rural areas in southern Somalia. Source BBC

Brazil awaits outcome of key step in Rousseff impeachment

0
Brazil President Dilmar Rousseff has come under attacks for the spate of corruption in the countryBrazil is awaiting the outcome of a congressional committee vote – a key step in the process to impeach President Dilma Rousseff.
The 65-member committee will decide whether to recommend impeachment over allegations she manipulated government accounts to hide a growing deficit. Police in Brazil are preparing for protests in the capital, Brasilia. A two-metre-high (6.5ft) metal barricade is being built to keep anti- and pro-government protesters apart. The committee began its deliberations at about 11:00 local time (14:00 GMT), O Globo reported. Attorney General Jose Eduardo Cordozo, speaking for the president at a bad-tempered meeting, condemned the “flawed” process. “It is absurd to dismiss a president who has not committed crimes, nor stolen a penny. And such a process without crime or fraud, would be a coup,” he said. But the committee’s head, Jovair Arantes, who last week said there were grounds for the impeachment process to continue, on Monday defended that decision, saying it had been backed by lawyers, economists and the media. The committee’s vote is largely symbolic, as no matter what the outcome of it is, the full lower house of Congress will vote on the impeachment later this week or at the beginning of next. But analysts say it will serve as an indicator of how key members of the lower house feel about impeaching the president, and media suggest the committee’s vote could be close. Divided nation Brazilian media are reporting that more than 100 members of the 513-strong lower house are still undecided. If Ms Rousseff, who strongly denies the allegations against her, can get 172 members to oppose the impeachment, the proceedings will be shelved. If, however, 342 vote in favour of the impeachment, the matter will go to the Senate. The Senate will then have to decide whether to proceed with the impeachment. A simple majority would suffice for that. If that happens, Ms Rousseff will be suspended for 180 days while the impeachment trial continues in the Senate. For her to be removed from office permanently, two-thirds of the Senate will have to vote in favour. The security forces said they were expecting mass protests to coincide with the vote in the lower house with smaller demonstrations in the days preceding it. Prisoners helped the security forces build an 80m-long metal barricade on the esplanade in front of the congressional building to keep supporters and opponents of the government apart. Protesters have also been told to refrain from bringing inflatable dolls to the demonstrations and from wearing masks or otherwise obscuring their faces. Dolls of former President Lula wearing prison clothing are a common sight at anti-government protests. Brazilians are divided into those who support the government and who say the impeachment process is a coup d’etat against Ms Rousseff and those who allege that she and her predecessor in office, Lula, are corrupt. The latest Datafolha opinion poll suggests 61% favour impeachment, down from 68% in March. Lula is under investigation for alleged money laundering, which he denies. Brazil’s Supreme Court is expected to rule this week on whether Lula can take up the post of chief of staff to Ms Rousseff. Lula was sworn in to the post last month but was suspended almost immediately by a judge because of the allegations against him. Source: BBC

Want to slim? Get chocolate and red wine

0
file photoForget counting calories and crunching kale. The key to losing weight is to eat cheese and chocolate and drink red wine, a leading scientist said last night.
Professor Tim Spector, of King’s College London, said that everything we think we know about diets is wrong. And that rather than depriving ourselves of our favourite foods, we should make time to eat them. Cheese, chocolate and red wine are all on the menu, as are nuts, coffee and dairy products. The professor’s unorthodox advice stems from his belief that successful dieting isn’t down to calorie counting but the bugs living in a person’s gut. Although you might not realise it, the average human stomach is home to around 4lb of bacteria. Some of these aid in the digestion of our food, others are involved in appetite and fat storage. But not all are helpful. Professor Spector says that by eating the right foods, we can cultivate more good bacteria, and so stay slim and healthy. Speaking at the Oxford Literary Festival, he said: ‘We ingest these microbes and they end up in our gut, where they diversify with the new foods we introduce over the years. ‘The more diverse foods we eat, the more varieties of microbes in our bodies, which makes us healthier.’ Recommending dairy products, he said: ‘Regular cheese eaters actually have less heart disease than those who don’t eat cheese, contrary to what your GP says. ‘Unpasteurised cheese is one of the best things you can eat, because it is one of the richest sources of living healthy microbes and fungi. ‘Probiotic foods such as yoghurt are rich in microbes and should be enjoyed regularly, as they increase our microbe levels.’ Other foods provide fodder for good bacteria to grow and thrive. Professor Spector said: ‘Some foods such as oils, nuts and seeds act as a fertiliser for microbes. ‘This is why many Mediterranean peoples longer than Brits, because they enjoy a diet full of olive oil, amongst other things like cheese and salads. ‘This is because they contain high levels of polyphenols which microbes feed on, and in turn makes us slim.’ Our gut bacteria also enjoy chocolate and red wine almost as much as we do. However, junk food, while tasty, plays no part in the professor’s diet plan. He says that fatty, sugary foods kill of helpful bacteria, while allowing potentially toxic ones to thrive. Proof of this comes from an experiment in which he put his son Tom on a diet of McDonald’s food for ten days. Professor Spector said: ‘Tom’s gut microbes had been devastated — 1,400 different species, accounting for 40 per cent of his gut diversity, had been lost. ‘Microbes are not only essential to how we digest food; they control the calories we absorb and provide vital enzymes and vitamins. ‘It is clear that the more diverse your diet, the more diverse your microbes and the better your health at any age.’ Other evidence comes from his own studies on twins, which have shown gut bugs help explain why one identical twin struggles with their weight, while the other doesn’t. Professor Spector, who describes his work in detail in his book The Diet Myth: The Real Science Behind What We Eat, ‘Ultimately, everyone should treat their gut as a beautiful English garden. The more varieties of microbes and foods we eat, the more flowers our gardens have and the healthier they look. ‘Throw in some probiotics like yoghurts and cheese, along with nuts, seeds and oils to nourish the microbes, and our gardens will be flourishing. ‘Avoid processed foods and they are limited in microbe levels because they are mainly made up of chemicals. ‘And enjoy some cheese, chocolate and red wine.’ Source Mail Online

Probe shameful WASSCE leakage – NPP

0
file photoThe New Patriotic Party is demanding a probe into the leakage of some examination papers in the ongoing West African Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).
The youth wing of the party that is pushing for the investigation believes the examination that is conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has suffered “perennial leakage” which it describes as “shameful”. It also bemoaned what it said was lack of “concrete measure from officialdom to halt this disgraceful act”. “As a wing, we are deeply concerned about the negative repercussions such acts have on parents, students in particular and the very credibility of our certificates internationally,” the party said in a statement signed by its National Youth Organizer, Sammi Awuku, Sunday. In some cases students are made to re-sit cancelled leaked papers. This, the NPP youth wing contends, brings extra responsibility on parents who are “already overburdened”. “Again, the inconvenience caused to our mostly hardworking students cannot in anyway be quantified. Both parents and students are forced to pay for the negligence of public officials.” The statement adds, “The National Youth Wing of the NPP adds its voice to calls for an independent committee to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the culprits to book.” Source: tv3network.com | Ghana

Show strong interest in science and technology – Joyce Aryee to girls

0
file photoFormer Chief Executive of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Dr. Joyce Aryee, has encouraged girls to show strong interest in science-related programmes to bridge the gender gap in technology.
This, she said, was vital to boost the nation’s human resources – innovative and creative people, capable of providing solutions to its development challenges. Dr. Aryee, who is the Executive Director of the Salt and Light Ministries, was opening a three-day mentoring camp for 200 female science students selected from 81 senior high schools (SHS) across the country in Kumasi. They have all been awarded scholarship by Vodafone Ghana Foundation and this involves payment of their school fees, books and allowances for the duration of their three-year SHS education. The camp, organized by the Foundation, was meant to provide the platform for the girls to be mentored by accomplished personalities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Dr. Aryee identified poverty, institutional structures and culture as factors hindering girls from pursuing science and technology courses at the tertiary level of education and said these needed to be tackled. She asked the girls to have the courage venture into male-dominated fields. Nana Yaa Afriyie Ofori-Koree, Head of Vodafone Ghana Foundation and Sustainability, said the scholarship scheme was being managed in partnership with the British Council and the Ghana Education Service (GES). Constance Swaniker, Chief Executive Officer of Accents and Arts Limited, Farida Bedwei, a celebrated software engineer, and Anita Erskine, a renowned television personality, were among successful women in technology, present to mentor the girls.
