Building a national cathedral is a misplaced priority – Samini

0

Multiple award-winning Ghanaian reggae/dancehall music icon, Emmanuel Andrews Sammini, widely known by his stage name Samini has expressed his opinion on the government building of a National Cathedral in the midst of the country’s economic challenges.

Speaking in an interview with Bella Mundi on TV3’s The Day Show, Samini, who was known to have supported the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the past, didn’t shy away from his concerns, spoke up against the government’s plan to construct a National Cathedral in this hard time.

The ‘My Own’ hitmaker strongly referred to the decision for the building of National Cathedral by the government of Ghana as a case of misplaced priority when he was asked about how he feels about the performance of the government so far.

“I am a person who does not buy into the idea of building a national Cathedral. That is purely a misplaced priority,” Samini stated.

He urged the government to shift its focus and allocate resources to critical sectors like healthcare, education, job creation, and poverty alleviation.

In his view, addressing these pressing issues should take precedence over constructing a National Cathedral, especially during these ongoing economic issues.

My father was assassinated in my presence – Teni

0

Nigerian singer, Teniola Apata MON famously known as Teni, has revealed that the trauma of watching her father being murdered when she was two years old has affected her life.

Teni’s father, Simeon Apata, a retired Nigerian army Brigadier-General, was assassinated by gunmen on January 8, 1995, in Lagos.

In a recent interview with Temisan Emmanuel Ahwieh, aka Taymesan, on the Tea With Tay podcast, Teni said, “My father was a disciplinarian. He was a soldier and he owned a school; Apata Memorial High School. He was also a big philanthropist.”

She continued, “Growing up with my father passing at such a young age, the trauma of losing my father at a young age affected me. You know, him being assassinated in the presence of all of us and all that stuff. I was 2 at the time.”

Teni said her father’s assassination robbed her of having a father figure and gave her trust issues.

“They [gunmen] came into our house purposely to kill him,” she said.

Despite the trauma, Teni said her father would always remain her hero.

MC Yaa Yeboah slams Prophet Nigel Gaisie for being ‘childish’

0

Popular media personality, MC Yaa Yeboah, has slammed the leader of the Prophetic Hill Chapel, Prophet Nigel Gaisie, stating without equivocation that he is being childish on the back of his recent about one ‘Sheriff Black’.

She has raised pointed questions about the prophecy’s clarity and purpose, particularly in light of the prophet’s reluctance to acknowledge its subject, a figure known as ‘Sheriff Black.’ MC Yaa Yeboah asserts that the prophet’s evasive stance is problematic.

A few days ago, Gaisie in a post referenced a certain Sheriff Black tasking his family to pray for him because of something unpleasant he (Gaisie) had seen in the spirit.

The media widely reported the news as a prophecy on musician Black Sherif but Gaisie clarified on the September 16, edition of UTV’s United Showbiz Show that he did not refer directly to the artiste.

“That is your word,” he responded when the host asked if he referred to Black Sherif by his post.

He continued: “With prophecies, we see and prophesy in bits, I didn’t hear Black Sherif, I heard Sherif Black. I saw Sherif Black in the spirit. But whichever way it is, a sensible person can make deductions from it.

“Prophecies come figuratively, so if there is anything close to anything about or close to me, I can take steps. It is better safe than sorry and people in the arts after anything is said about them have often attacked the clergy,” he added.

Reacting to this as a panelist on United Showbiz, Yaa Yeboah could not fathom why the prophet would be evasive.

“I think Nigel is being childish, so to speak,” she said on the show monitored by GhanaWeb. “His explanation makes no sense in my opinion. What he’s said doesn’t make any sense to me, even spiritually.”

“We all know that one person who is famous and is called Black Sherif but he couldn’t even admit that it’s this same person, yet he keeps saying when a prophecy is given, we must do something about it.

“Who should do something about the prophecy? Who is the Sherif Black you claim you’re referring to? If this person you’re talking about is not popular, why then put it on social media?” she asked.

‘My future is rich in artistry’ – Black Sherif

0

Sounding elated about his steady progress in the music industry, Artiste of the Year and one of Ghana’s Afrobeats exports, Black Sherif, says fans should expect more immersive and soul-touching music from his label in the years ahead.

He says his future is “rich in artistry” as different gates of ideas keep popping up “sonically and visually”.

Speaking to CNN’s Larry Modowo on the African Voices Programme recently, the 21-year-old said he chose to abandon other interests to focus solely on his music career after high school.

“I was building interests in so many things when growing up I had an interest in playing football, but I dashed them all away. I just knew right after high school I’m going hundred percent (into music) so after high school, 4th June 2019, I started making music heavily,” he recalled.

Describing most of his songs as “modern highlife with reggae influences,” ‘Blacko’ explained that his parents’ love for music somewhat contributed to his dexterity in putting together resounding lyrics and rhythms.

“The first time I met my dad, he put me on reggae and that feeling was different. My mother loves Alpha Blondy and Adane Best so that built my taste and interest in music,” he stated.

The Afrobeat singer who released his debut album “The Villain I Never Was,” in 2022, said he decided work “solo” on that project as he had “a lot of things to talk about.”

With huge following and collaborations with other musicians including Sakordie on the song: “Country Side,” Kweku Frimpong, however, expressed “shock” at his global appeal over the years.

“In Konongo Zongo where grew up, it was just my household that knew I could sing and make music and now it’s outside and overseas. My first show in London, a month after my album, they sang every word A-Z,” he said with hand gestures.
‘Blacko’ admitted that his swift popularity was overwhelming, nonetheless, he said: “I am the leading actor in my life so I try to do what is best for me.”

“My feelings are my art. When I am crying I make music when I am happy I make music when I am confused, I make music,” he stated, adding that life experiences shape his perspective and the type of music he records.

Listen: Inusa Dawuda drops ‘Waka-Waka’ album

0

The multi-talented Ghanaian-born German, Inusa Dawuda, who turned from boxing to music has released his latest album, Waka Waka, with 10 tracks which he said is a cross-over of contemporary Afrobeat, Afrobeats, Amapiano, Afrofunk, Highlife and reggae vibes in general term.

Like his past songs, his friend for many years, the Ghanaian journalist, Francis Kokutse, has again written one song, “Turn Back The Clock” on the latest album.

Inusa said, the title “ has nothing to do with Shakira’s ‘Waka Waka’ because she hadn’t even heard of it, at the time it was released,” he said, adding that, “Waka Waka Day & Night” was the first song I recorded live in the studio with my band. It was created in collaboration with my former bassist, brother, and friend from Warri, Nigeria, Lisbon Bolowei Simon, who is unfortunately no longer with us.”

This is Inusa’s eleventh real album and about 100 single releases and he said, the word “WAKA WAKA” came to being and was used on his first album “Just Natural” in the mid-90s. The song is called “Waka Waka Day & Night” with my international staffed band called, INUSA’s Groove Factory.

Inusa said Lisbon used to tell him about his days with Fela Kuti‘s Band, and he was “important in my career and I thank him for the Afrofunky style!!

“From the word ‘work,’ we decided to change it to ‘Waka Waka’ in Pidgin English. “We work day and night and are still suffering. We sang how many Africans in the diaspora felt.”

Inusa started off as a semi-professional in the mid 90’s is celebrating his 30th anniversary in music and still going strong with thirst for more till the bones are rotten.

Reacting to which song is favourite for all the years he has spent in the music industry, he said, “It’s difficult to pick out a song as a favorite because they are like my children. Each song has its purpose. Some are easy to listen to, and some work really well in live performances because they get people dancing, for example, “Going Back To My Roots,” “Waka Waka Day & Night,” “All I Need Is To Be Loved,” and “Don’t Look any Further,” played a bit faster than recorded@.

Among the captivating songs on the album are the pre-released singles “One Love,” “All I Want Is to be Loved,” and the instrumental piece “Bimbia,” which have already gained popularity and earned spots in various playlists. The album’s title, “WAKA WAKA,” is inspired by Inusa’s early composition “Waka Waka Day & Night,” an Afro-funk song recorded with his Groove Factory back in the mid-90s.

The album starts with the fresh 2023 afrobeats-highlife version of Lamont Dozier’s “Going Back to My Roots.” The album also features reimagined covers of “Don’t Look any Further” by Denis Eduard and “Wild World” by Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens, with a fresh twist.

For those who appreciate heartfelt and romantic lyrics, “Believe and Feel” offers a beautiful blend of Afro, RnB, UK Garage, and soul. On the other hand, “Turn Back the Clock” presents a captivating soulful song with deep lyrics that will make you introspective about your relationships.

Inusa originally from Ghana, was born in Accra, Ghana, and as a teenager moved with his parents to Hamburg, Germany. He learned to play the saxophone during his youth, and he was also actively involved in sports. During the early 1990s, he was a multiple boxing champion in Hamburg in the light heavyweight division.

For 2009–10, Inusa was acknowledged as “Russia’s Most Successful Foreign Artist”, where to date, his single Rumours (Digi Digi) has received an excess of over a million radio plays, beating a stream of fellow foreign artists in a category that included Lady Gaga and David Guetta.

The first successes in the field of music came to Inusa in the mid 1990s, when he travelled and played with several bands, playing cover versions of favourite hits from James Brown to Bob Marley. His primary musical influences include Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti, and Grover Washington, Jr.[

NPP Primaries: Agya Koo hits hard on Bawumia

0

Veteran Ghanaian comedian and actor, Kofi Adu, popularly known as Agya Koo, has sent out an interesting message to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who is also contesting in the flagbearership race of the New Patriotic Party.

In an interview on One Ghana TV, Agya Koo spoke extensively on the various contributions of the 5 aspirants to the party and why he thinks some of them may not be eligible to carry the party’s flag.

Agya Koo stated that, even though Vice President Bawumia has done an excellent job in his capacity, he believes the best person to be the party’s flagbearer is Kennedy Agyapong.

“I joined the party to support Nana Addo and now he is retiring. No one knows Bawumia’s house but he has worked really hard for the NPP. But in a race, some are better than others. So now the time has come for us to hand the baton over to Kennedy Agyapong,” the veteran actor opined.

When asked his opinion on Dr. Bawumia contesting in the 2024 race, Agya Koo said, “If Bawumia can hear, he needs to relax, rest a little, restrategize, and come back because it is not yet his turn.”

The host then asked if he (Agya Koo) knew about Dr. Bawumia’s experience since he has been Ghana’s vice president for two terms and the actor replied:

“Kennedy Agyapong has helped the party for as long as I can remember. I really like him because he visits his constituency, listens to their plights and then goes ahead to help. For some others, we cannot even pinpoint some of the things they have done or can even do so when I consider all this, Kennedy ticks all the boxes.”

Princess Diana’s iconic black sheep sweater auctioned for $1.14 million

0

The late Princess of Wales, Princess Diana’s iconic sheep sweater sold for a record $1.14 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York.

The sweater, featuring a black sheep among rows of white ones, was unearthed in an attic in March and commanded a higher price than many other objects tied to the “People’s Princess.”

Bidding opened on August 31 and the top bid stayed under $200,000 until the auction’s final minutes. Sotheby’s had estimated the value of the sweater at $50,000 to $80,000. The identity of the winning bidder was not disclosed.

The sweater’s design is often described as symbolic of Diana’s place within the royal family. However, fashion historians believe she was simply sporting the “Sloane Ranger” style she helped popularise when she wore the sweater in 1981, a month before her wedding to then Prince Charles.

Shortly after her marriage, Buckingham Palace wrote to the sweater’s maker, Warm and Wonderful Knitwear, that it had been damaged and sought a repair or replacement. Princess Diana then wore the replacement to another polo match in 1983.

Sotheby’s included the letter to Warm and Wonderful as well as a thank-you note for the replacement in the auction lot. It also used the sweater’s small hole to confirm authenticity.

She was the first wife of King Charles III and mother of Prince William and Prince Harry.
