North Korean teens sentenced to prison with hard labour for watching k-dramas

0

Rare footage obtained by BBC Korean shows North Korea publicly sentencing two teenage boys to 12 years of hard labour for watching K-dramas.

The footage, which appears to have been filmed in 2022, shows two 16-year-old boys handcuffed in front of hundreds of students at an outdoor stadium.

It also shows uniformed officers reprimanding the boys for not “deeply reflecting on their mistakes”.

South Korean entertainment, including TV, is banned in the North.

Despite that, some are prepared to risk severe punishment to access K-dramas, which have a huge global audience.

Footage such as this is rare because North Korea forbids photos, videos and other evidence of life in the country from being leaked to the outside world.

This video was provided to the BBC by the South and North Development (Sand), a research institute that works with defectors from the North.

It suggests authorities are coming down harder on such incidents. The clip has reportedly been distributed in North Korea for ideology education and to warn citizens not to watch “decadent recordings”.

The video includes a narrator who is repeating state propaganda. “The rotten puppet regime’s culture has spread even to teenagers,” says the voice, in an apparent reference to South Korea. “They are just 16 years old, but they ruined their own future,” it adds.

The boys were also named by officers and had their addresses revealed.

In the past, minors who broke the law in this way would be sent to youth labour camps rather than put behind bars, and the punishment was usually less than five years.

In 2020, however, Pyongyang enacted a law to make watching or distributing South Korean entertainment punishable by death.

A defector previously told the BBC that he was forced to watch a 22-year-old man shot to death. He said the man was accused of listening to South Korean music and had shared films from the South with his friend.

Sand CEO Choi Kyong-hui said Pyongyang sees the spread of K-dramas and K-pop as a danger to its ideology.

“Admiration for South Korean society can soon lead to a weakening of the system…This goes against the monolithic ideology that makes North Koreans revere the Kim family,” she said.

North Koreans started getting a taste of South Korean entertainment in the 2000s, during the years of the South’s “sunshine policy” which saw it offering unconditional economic and humanitarian aid to the North.

Seoul ended the policy in 2010, saying it found the aid did not reach the ordinary North Koreans it was intended for, and that it had not resulted in any “positive changes” to Pyongyang’s behaviour.

However, South Korean entertainment continued to reach North Korea through China.

“If you get caught watching an American drama, you can get away with a bribe, but if you watch a Korean drama, you get shot,” a North Korean defector told BBC Korean on Thursday.

“For North Korean people, Korean dramas are a ‘drug’ that helps them forget their difficult reality,” the defector said.

“In North Korea, we learn that South Korea lives much worse than us, but when you watch South Korean dramas, it’s a completely different world. It seems like the North Korean authorities are wary of that,” said another North Korean defector in her 20s.

African women wearing wigs have low self-esteem – Veteran actress

0

Veteran Nollywood actress, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett has taken a swipe at African women who wear wigs to augment their beauty, saying it is a sign of low self-esteem.

The veteran actress, broadcaster and National Honours Award holder remarked in a close-up chat with Potpourri at a function in Lagos.

She opined that God has blessed African women with the best kind of hair of all races and wondered aloud why African women would rather go for human hair of less endowed races.“We have been blessed with the best kind of hair that we can transform into any kind of look we desire.

“We have to love ourselves as Africans and appreciate our God-given beauty. Our Africanness is what stands us out among all the races of the world. The African woman is beautiful in all ramifications. I believe women who go for wigs and human hair have low self-esteem. Their desire to look Western and foreign is a sign of low self-esteem,” she said.

The indefatigable actress and unapologetic feminist also emphasised the importance and role of women in society, asserting that women are the source of life and creation. She said for anything to be orderly, women must be taken into account and treated with respect and compassion.

“If you want your life to be in order and successful, be kind to the women in your life. It is when the women in your life are happy that you can truly be happy. By women, I mean your mother, your wife, your sister or as the case may be,” she said.

Nick Cannon says he’s content with 12 kids, ‘no plans’ for baby number 13

0

Nick Cannon is content with his 12 children. The comedian, television host, and new Buffalo Wild Wings spokesperson recently spoke to People about the likelihood of making new additions to his family of a dozen.

“I’m chilling right now. There’s no plans on the horizon as of yet,” he told the outlet.

It’s refreshing coming from a man who seemed more than happy to boost the national birth rate single-handedly, garnering criticism from peers and fans.

“It’s so funny, everybody’s always trying to get me to have more kids,” he continued. “It’s like, 12 ain’t enough?”

Cannon previously stated that only God could tell him when it’s time to throw in the towel, but admitted that he’s been seriously considering getting a vasectomy. Perhaps this new interview means that God has spoken.

The Wild’n Out creator said he’s “finally coming up for air” after a busy holiday season with his children and beginning to prepare “for all the spring break type of stuff that’s right upon us.”

The host discussed keeping up with his kids extracurricular activities, which no doubt seems difficult considering his brother admitted that Cannon uses Google to keep track of his rugrats.

“So, a lot of getting back outside again, a lot of basketball starting back up, and just a lot of sports and outdoor activities,” he said. “As a dad, that’s the kind of stuff you structure your schedule around, all of your kids’ extracurricular activities.”

Water crisis: Accra’s population has outgrown our capacity – GWCL

0

The Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited, (GWCL) Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah, has stated that the population of Accra has outgrown the capacity of the water company.

Residents in various parts of Accra, including Adenta, Kasoa, Weija, and Apaapa in La, have voiced concerns about the irregular water supply affecting their communities.

This situation, the residents claim has adversely impacted their daily lives, forcing some to resort to purchasing water from tankers at exorbitant prices.

Complaints from residents suggest that the Ghana Water Company Limited failed to communicate plans for temporary water supply cuts in specific communities, with some reporting an absence of water for nearly a year.

Addressing the issue of inconsistent water on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, January 22, Ing. Braimah acknowledged the need for the GWCL to upgrade its machinery to meet the increasing demands of Accra’s residents.

“Already in Accra, the volume of water we produce, the population has outgrown it, and we are looking at putting up a new system at Kpone to boost our production but resource constraint has been the problem, Since 2017, 2018, we have been working and we have not settled on finances.

“So already if you have a limited volume of water coming into the system, and your population is big, you have to block them and supply them according to the demands of the people but you cannot give everybody [water] at the same times otherwise some will not get. And so we have been limited for a very long time.”

Ing. Braimah, however, acknowledged that some complaints were related to localized faults, which, when reported to the nearest GWCL office, could be addressed promptly.
