Dipo puberty rite leaves Krobos in limbo

0

DipoIndigenes of Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region are divided over the continuous celebration of dipo puberty rites following what some describe as a violation of the rights of the girls.

While a section believe the values and objectives are still relevant, others think the custom has outlived its usefulness. Dipo is the rich and revered culture of the Manya and Yilo Krobos. The tradition fights early sex pre-marital sex, and early pregnancy.

The puberty right is celebrated in the months of April and May each year. Although only girls are taken through the rites, boys and men are equally bonded by the laws guiding dipo.

Parents are obliged to ensure the celibacy of their girl children or they risk losing them through banishment should they get pregnant before celebrating dipo.

Initially, the girls are confined up to six months or more, and schooled in personal hygiene, ancestral rites, cooking, housekeeping, child birth and upbringing, and how to be good mothers and wives.

But these virtues are now heavily challenged by modernity and foreign religions. Some of the indigenes who spoke to TV3 said they have difficulty in seeing the essence of the rites which they say defies all modern forms of dignity.

The Krobos are now forced to limit the rich tradition in practice, duration and lessons taught. The event is now held officially over four days between Friday dawn and Monday.

The girls are taken through rituals to prove their celibacy before they qualify to partake in the festival.

One crucial part of the rite is when the girls sit on the sacred stone to prove their virginity. Those who are pregnant and the men responsible for their pregnancy face ‘kukudipo’ which is a form of punishment for not maintaining celibacy.

This is also to deter other young girls growing up to be patient until the right time and any lady who partakes in the rites brings honour to herself and her family.

The highlight of the ceremony is when they drop their childhood cloth to be entirely covered in beautiful beads made by the Krobos themselves. The festival again provides opportunity for the people of Krobo to exhibit their rich handmade beads.

‘Abofra’ composer MzVee has announced that she is abandoning schooling at the Ghana Telecom University College in Accra.

She disclosed that she is enrolling on an online course to complete her education.

Speaking on Accra-based Joy FM on Saturday, May 21, the 2016 BET nominee admitted that the news will break the hearts of many of her mates.

She says one of the reasons of taking that decision is that “lecturers mark me down” as they assume she does not have enough time for her education because of her career.

Speaker mad at MPs over inflated budget on Achimota-Ofankor road project

0

Speaker AdjahoThe Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, has flayed the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, saying its failure to exercise proper diligence over the Achimota-Ofankor Highway project, contributed to the 217 per cent inflation of the project value.

“In fact all of us would have to take the blame; the engineers, those who did not follow procurement procedures and all those who approved of the project,” the Speaker said.

The original value was estimated at GH¢40.4 million, but it was bloated by approximately GH¢88 million, bringing the total cost of the project cost to GH¢128.4 million.

The Speaker, who had days earlier sounded a caution that he would not countenance shoddy work from MPs, also criticised the Ministry of Roads and Highways for making unrelated expenditure in the execution of the project.

A Public Accounts Committee’s Report on the Performance Audit Report of the Auditor General on the Construction of the Achimota -Ofankor Road, which was presented to the House, on Friday, cited the purchase of a BMW saloon car at f $160,305 for the then Minister of Roads and Highways, Joe Gidisu, to use for the inspection of the  project.

The vehicle had a comprehensive insurance cover of $6,672.

The Audit, which commenced in June 2012, and was completed in October 2012, covered May 2004 to December 2011.

The New Patriotic Party Administration, in 2006, awarded the contract to the China Railway Group Corporation.

Other unrelated expenses by the Ministry was the payment of GH¢34,764 in allowances for 13 staff of the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) and the restructuring of the GHA’s archive basement into offices at GH¢50,000.

Others are the renovation of the Deputy CEO’s Office and the training of four staff of the GHA at GIMPA at GH¢33,225; while GH¢11,264 was spent on and the participation of four staff in an Urban Transportation Course at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The Speaker said with such glaring over-expenditure, the Committee of Roads and Transport had failed Parliament and the nation as a whole.

The Speaker rejected the usual argument that the Committee was not well-resourced for its members to effectively tour the project site to enable it to make their requisite recommendations.

He said that, in any way, should not have prevented the Committee from making proper due diligence in the approval of budget estimates, which had a spillover from the preceding year’s estimates.

“You don’t need money to go round to be able to raise the red flag because every year, the Committee recommends for appropriation the budget for the Ministry and that in considering the estimates due diligence could have been done to detect such expenses outside the normal contract,” the Speaker said.

Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, the Majority Chief Whip, said it was time the acquisition of luxurious vehicles to inspect projects was stopped because the nation was facing economic challenges.

He said pick-up vehicles must be acquired by the Government and put in a pool for Ministers to use to inspect various projects instead of buying luxurious vehicles for such inspection anytime a project was being executed.

Mr Osei Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu, the Minority Leader, had earlier argued that the Executive intentionally was incapacitating Parliament by not providing money for the Committees of Parliament to exercise their oversight responsibility as constitutionally mandated.

The Minority Leader said if the Committee on Roads and Transport had properly been resourced to carry out its oversight role all these wastages would have been avoided.

“It is imperative for the various Committees of Parliament to be given the necessary resources to enable them to discharge their oversight functions,” the Minority Leader, who is also the MP for Suame, in the Ashanti Region, advised.

Final year teacher trainees warn gov’t ahead of completion

The training teachers demand immediate processing of their particulars with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department

Final year training teachers in the western and central sector (WEC Sector) have reminded government to put in place measures to ensure that they do not suffer same fate as field teachers over salaries.

To this end, they are calling on government to immediately get them registered at the Controller and Accountant General’s Department in order to receive their salaries immediately after posting.

The trainees – billed to complete school at the end of July – made these sentiments known in a statement released on Friday, May 20.

“We are therefore by this release petitioning the government to put in place visible measures to register level 300 teacher trainees at the Controller and Accountant General’s department immediately, so we can receive our salaries as early as possible when we are posted,” the statement said.

Find the statement below:

TTAG – WEC SECTOR challenges government to explicitly spell out the fate of teacher trainees before June 1st June 2016.

The leadership of the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana – Western and Central Sector is calling on the government of Ghana to come out explicitly and tell teacher trainees and the Ghanaian populace the measures being put in place to ensure that newly trained teachers who will be posted in August this year are paid their salaries immediately after their posting, since they are not taking any allowance.

It would be recalled that, the teacher trainees allowance has been cancelled since the beginning of the 2013/2014 academic year and any attempt made by the trainees to ensure the reverse of this unpopular policy has proved futile. Students in the public colleges of education have gone through hell in pursuing their dream of becoming teachers to train the future leaders of our dear country, Ghana. With barely two months to complete the programme, what is the fate of the final year teacher trainee? Their out program which received no support from the government has already burdened the final year teacher trainees with heavy costs of rent, utility bills, teaching and learning materials, just to mention but a few of them.

Even though the leadership made several attempts to catch the eye of the government and other stakeholders, all their efforts remained a fiasco. Teacher trainees can confidently say that, government has not made any advancement to ensure that newly trained teachers for the 2016/2017 academic year are captured on government payroll immediately after their posting. Life was and has always been very tough for teacher trainees during their out-programme even as some live in groups of three or four and share the responsibility of rent charges, utility bills, and even cook together. The final year teacher trainee is therefore left with no option than to also worry about how tougher life is going to be after his or her posting.

Now the big and most worrisome question staring at the faces of final year teacher trainees is: how and where they are going to get money to cater for their rent, the transportation of their belongings and their livelihood after they’ve been posted to their new stations? Which landlord will accept that we stay in his or her house till the time we start receiving our salaries? We can’t simply go through this embarrassment. Even our predecessors who were still taking the trainees’ allowance after their posting were complaining of economic hardship, how much more we non-allowance beneficiaries? All that we hear is, “it’s in the pipeline”. Till when is it getting out of the pipeline? Is that pipeline really not chocked?

We are therefore by this release petitioning the government to put in place visible measures to register level 300 teacher trainees at the Controller and Accountant General’s department immediately, so we can receive our salaries as early as possible when we are posted.

We also wish to remind the government that we have a semester’s feeding grant in arrears and as stated earlier, we will complete our programme in two months’ time (In the month of July). We therefore plead with the government to release the grant by the end of June so that we can access it before the end of our programme in the colleges of education.

Finally, there is this rumor that newly trained teachers will do one year internship before being absorbed into mainstream teaching. If it is true, then we want to tell government and the whole Ghana that we didn’t commit any crime to suffer unfortunate hardship so therefore we can’t simply take this. What offence have we committed?

Again, we wish to reiterate that the feeding of teacher trainees in the colleges of education remains the sole responsibility of the government, and that, our earlier resolution that no trainee should pay the feeding fee, still holds and we cannot undergo any internship.

In conclusion, all that we seek for is a prompt payment of the salaries and feeding grant of newly trained teachers and teacher trainees respectively.

We would also like to state categorically and emphatically that TTAG is a non-partisan organization and must be treated as such.

Man mauled by lions in Chile zoo in apparent suicide attempt

Zoos have an established protocol for when a member of the public is exposed to dangerous animals

A man stripped naked and jumped into a lion enclosure at a zoo in Chile in an apparent suicide attempt, forcing staff to shoot dead two lions.

The 20-year-old man, said to be suffering mental problems, was seriously injured after being mauled.

The zoo in Santiago was crowded with visitors, some of whom saw the attack.

Animal rights activists condemned the shooting of the lions, but the zoo said its priority was the man’s life and it had no fast-activating tranquillisers.

Santiago Metropolitan Zoo director Alejandra Montalba said she believed the man forced his way through the roof of the enclosure, jumped in and then took off his clothes.

Ms Montalba said the zoo had an “established protocol” and acted to save the man’s life, adding that staff were “deeply affected” by the deaths of the lions, a male and a female.

Local media reported that a suicide note was found among the man’s clothing and that some witnesses had heard him shout religious proclamations.

Chief Imam orders police to stop public-preaching Muslims

0

IslamThe Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haruun has called on the Ashanti Regional Police Command to halt all public preaching involving Muslim sects in Kumasi.

Sheikh Haruun says the police have been “directed to stop them from preaching with loud speakers in lorry parks and open places to avert any fight among these sects”.

The Chief Imam was commenting on what transpired at Aboabo Number Two in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region where two Muslim sects clashed over some comments.

There was a clash between two Islamic sects, the Tijaniyya, and the Al-Sunna Muslim groups during the week in which two people were injured from machete attack and windscreens of two vehicles were smashed in the course of the violence.

The clash was said to have started as a result of an insult followers of the two sects traded on Facebook but some followers of the Al-Sunna youths allegedly identified and assaulted a young man they believed had been insulting their leader on Facebook.

This angered members of the Tijaniyya sect who reacted to the attack on their member resulting in the clash.

Speaking on Onua FM’s ‘Yen Sempa’ hosted by Kwame Karikari, the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam said they have also realized the two sects have their mosques closer so the police have been alerted to ensure they do not preach with loud speakers. “They should preach inside. They should not preach outside too because this can bring political violence due to the elections”.

He said they have information that “they insult each other always through preaching and that is dangerous”.

Sheikh Haruun promised they will meet the sects to resolve the issue.

Police woman involved in sex video under probe

Cephas Arthur
SP Cephas Arthur: “The police have set up an enquiry to investigate the issue.”

The Ghana Police Service is investigating one of its female personnel whose sex video leaked and went viral on social media early this week.

Director of Public Affairs of the Service, Supt. Cephas Arthur confirmed the lady at the centre of the video that has been circulating on WhatsApp is indeed one of their officers, noting a service enquiry has commenced to establish if she has flouted any law.

“The police have set up an enquiry to investigate the issue, we will check if she has flouted any laws of Ghana or the Police Service, Supt Arthur told Onua FM’s Christian Agyei Frimpong Friday.

He said the investigation would also seek to establish the source of the leak, saying “We will also investigate who circulated the video. if it was something she did for her private personal use and someone circulated it, then it’s a criminal matter, if she took those video herself, circulated it, we shall investigate all.”

The lady [name withheld], a Sergeant,  who was stationed at the Sunyani Regional Police CID, was said to have been transferred to the Police CID Headquarters in Accra following the leak of the sex video.

Sources say the lady has fallen sick due to the incident and currently on admission at the Police Hospital in Accra.

She was said to have attempted suicide but this, Supt Arthur said, “I have not heard anything about what you are asking me, but I can tell you she is safe, alive, doing well and we have started our investigations”

The lady is seen in the video, which appeared to have been recorded with a webcam, naked in a room where she danced and made sexually teasing moves while she played with her body seductively.
