Okorase riot: Two arrested; Police gathering evidence against fetish priest

0

file photoTwo persons have been arrested in connection with Monday’s disturbances at Okorase in the Eastern Region which resulted in the burning a vehicle belonging to a fetish priest who was at the centre of the chaos.

Twenty-four year-old Kwasi Larbi and Cynthia Oduro, 36, are currently in Police custody on the offence of breach of peace, and are being processed for court, the Police has told TV3.

Residents of Okorase in the Akwapim North District of the Eastern Region on Monday evening went on the rampage, setting ablaze a vehicle to register their displeasure over the sudden disappearance of one man.

The angry residents say the Police has been dragging its heels in investigating a fetish priest, Jackson Kofi Didonu, who they suspect of being behind the disappearance of the 35-year old carpenter, Kojo Yebaoah.

The Police on Monday kept the priest in its custody to protect him from being lynched by the residents after a search team failed to find the missing carpenter; an action that triggered the residents to rise against the Police.

Meanwhile, calm has since been restored to the area with people going about their daily businesses but relatives of the carpenter have vowed to take the law into their hands should the Police fail to swiftly investigate the priest.

” We want the Police to help find our son or we take the law into our own hands,” one of the relatives told TV3.

On Tuesday, signs of Monday’s riot were still visible. The burnt vehicle and pelted stones were still scattered Okorase Police station area where the incident happened.

Speaking to TV3 Tuesday, Eastern Regional Public Relations officer, ASP Yeboah Nketiah, said they have granted the fetish priest bail but says that does not mean an end to the case, noting the Police needs evidence before it can prosecute the priest.

Background

The residents did not understand why the Police was protecting the priest who it said has failed to investigate the priest for the disappearance of the carpenter.

For over three hours, the Police could not control the crowd who pelted them with stones until reinforcement arrived to bring the situation under control.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were called in to extinguish the fire but the car was totally burnt.

Family sources told TV3 that Ntow left home three weeks ago in the company of two others including the fetish priest in search of some special “green bottles” to sell for money.

According to them, Yeboah never returned and all efforts to reach him on phone and other means have not yielded any result.

The family sources say they later saw the priest in the town, and quickly reported the matter to the Police, who met with them and the priest after which an agreement was reached for a search team to be dispatched to Apam in the Central Region where the three had gone in search of the bottles.

On Monday, the team comprising Police officers, family members and the priest went to Apam to search for Yeboah but did not find him. They then returned to Okorase.

“Rituals and other efforts did not help find the body or give a clue or direction to the whereabouts of the missing man,” one family member told TV3.

In view of the development, the Police sensing danger, decided to keep the priest in its custody to avoid him being lynched by the angry residents but that infuriated them the more as they suspected the Police was shielding him instead of investigating him.

One shot in renewed chieftaincy dispute at Ashalaja

file photoOne person has been shot at Ashalaja, near Amamasaman in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra in what is believed to be a renewed chieftaincy dispute in the area.

The victim, who was shot through the nose, has been rushed to the Amasamam Government Hospital where he is receiving medical attention.

The town has currently been taken over by the Amasaman Police to maintain peace and protect lives and property.

Wednesday’s incident stems from a protracted chieftaincy dispute between the current chief and a de-stooled one, Onua News has gathered.

Brother of the victim, Paul Quarshie Tetteh, told Onua News, he and three other siblings were developing their land in the area when some people, who are known to be close associates of the de-stooled chief, stormed the area and started shooting.

He said one of his brothers was shot in the process, noting another one managed to ran from the area to report the incident to the Amasaman Police who quickly rushed to the scene.

No arrest has been made.

It’s difficult to live in Ghana – Konadu confesses

0

Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has defended her decision to dethrone President Mahama, accusing the latter of making Ghana a difficult place to live.

In an exclusive interview on TV3’s New Day on Wednesday, Mrs. Rawlings pointed out that Ghanaians have been forced to endure the brunt of bad leadership by the Mahama-led administration.

Mrs. Rawlings, whose husband ruled Ghana for 19 years, believes the situation in the country has deteriorated since Jerry John Rawlings left office.

In her assessment, the country’s decision to run to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an indication that the economy has collapsed

“So you don’t run to the IMF when there is nothing wrong with you. The economy has been collapsed. Completely collapsed through theft, through mismanagement and others,” she asserted.

Mrs. Rawlings is hoping to contest the presidential race for the first time in November this year on the ticket of National Democratic Party (NDP), after a botched attempt in 2012.

The NDP was barred from contesting the last presidential election as a result of administrative errors during filing of presidential nomination forms in 2012, a situation she said was orchestrated.

She was elected as NDP’s flagbearer on Sunday at the party’s delegates congress in Accra.

“It is difficult to live in Ghana at the moment. It is difficult because there is so many problems affecting a lot of people,” Mrs. Rawlings told TV’s Bright Nana Amfoh.

Kotokuraba market to be ready in August – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has assured traders in the Central Region that the Kotokuraba Market will be ready by the end of August this year, two months behind schedule

The market, which has been under reconstruction since December 2014 after a court in Cape Coast ordered the demolition of the old one, was initially scheduled for completion next month.

However, President Mahama, while interacting with traders during his visit to the Kotokuraba market on the second day of his accounting to the people tour in the region, assured traders that the reconstruction would be completed in three months.

“It is left with three months for works to be completed at the market,” he said.

“We will commission this market to honour the late President John Evans Attah Mills,” he maintained.

“We promise that the traders who were already in, selling here will be given priority when the allocations are being made at the new market,” he added.

Onua FM’S correspondent, Timothy Kwame Kwakraba reports that the traders, who were delighted to meet the president, commended him for re-assuring that original occupants of the stalls at the old market would be given preference when allocations are being made at the newly reconstructed ultra modern market.

The new Kotokuraba market include space for shops, banks, hospitals, schools, a drainage system and properly marked walkways to ensure free movement of traders and customers.

It also has a car park, an office block, restaurants and a fire department.

The famous Kotokuraba Market is the center of trading activities in the region attracting farmers and traders from other regions such as Western and Greater Accra.

University students demand extension of voter registration at campuses

0

file photoThe University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG) has entreated the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to extend deadline of the ongoing limited voter registration at campuses.

The nationwide registration exercise is scheduled to end on Sunday, May 8 after entering its second phase on Wednesday, May 4.

But the students claim about 100,000 risk being disenfranchised as a result of the EC failing “to provide registration centres on some campuses or chosen to not provide adequate registration kits on campus to facilitate the process”.

This was contained in statement issued on Tuesday, May 3.

“We have had instances where students have had to queue for days without success, whiles having to respond to the natural pressures of revising for exams,” the statement said.

Read full statement below:

PRESS RELEASE

STATEMENT FROM THE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION OF GHANA (USAG) TO THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION (EC) OF GHANA

USAG CONCERNED ABOUT EFFECTIVE DISENFRANCHISEMENT OF GHANAIAN STUDENTS BY EC

We write to register our concerns over the ongoing limited registration exercise which we are afraid is not designed to encourage or allow eligible Ghanaians who are students to register to vote in 2016.

The Commission has set a 10-day period for this limited registration exercise, starting from April 28 to May 8. We are already half way through the exercise and per our calculations, less than 10 percent of the estimated number of young Ghanaian students eligible to vote has been able to so far register. If this trend continues, we are afraid it will amount effectively to an administrative decision taken by the EC that has only led to disenfranchising the majority of young Ghanaian students who have come of age to vote. This would be a tragedy against our democracy.

Currently, over 100,000 Ghanaian students across campuses up and down the country are facing challenges just trying to register. This is because the EC has either failed to provide registration centres on some campuses or chosen to not provide adequate registration kits on campus to facilitate the process.

We have had instances where students have had to queue for days without success, whiles having to respond to the natural pressures of revising for exams.

For instance, the University of Ghana, Legon, has about 28,000 students on campus and most of them are in the qualifying category to register. However the whole Legon Campus community has only one registration center.

The Mampong campus of the University of Education has no registration centre on campus. The students have access to a centre inconveniently situated outside of the campus.

Also, the highly populated Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology has not a single registration centre on campus. Students wanting to register have to trek outside of campus to do so.

Indeed, there is not a single tertiary institution in Ghana which has not been inconvenienced by the way the EC has chosen to conduct this exercise. Indeed, students are even compelled by the circumstances to conclude that it appears the EC has deliberately done things in this way to discourage them from registering to vote.

This perception is very unfortunate and needless. It was avoidable because the EC knows from experience and from its own expectation to register 1.2 million people that the highest concentration of the targeted group for the limited registration exercise are to be found on campuses across the country. So in deciding to distribute 3,500 registration kits across the country it ought to have positively discriminated in favour of students and deployed more than the usual number to campuses.

In this regard we entreat the EC to as a matter of urgency:

1. Extend the days for the limited voter registration exercise on our campuses across the country and;

2. Increase the number of registration kits available on campuses to facilitate speedy and smooth process.

This we believe will make the limited voter registration exercise meaningful and inclusive to achieve the goal of enfranchising new eligible voters. The EC cannot claim to be registering Ghanaians who have come of age when at the same time it has put together a process that effectively prevents people from registering or frustrates their efforts to so do. This is most odd, indeed.

It is our expectation that the Commission will treat this matter with the urgency, efficiency and professionalism it deserves. Ghanaian students have a constitutional duty and right to play their full part in determining how our nation is governed. To take this away is to effectively cause a coup against our collective constitutional right and duty.

Jordan Ayew under investigation in England

file photoThe Football Association says it will investigate striker Jordan Ayew’s actions during Aston Villa’s 3-2 defeat at Watford on Saturday.

Relegated Villa were leading 2-1 at Vicarage Road before two late goals from Watford captain Troy Deeney.

Ayew and team-mate Idrissa Gana Gueye were then allegedly involved in an incident involving home supporters.

Reports suggest the Ghana international, 24, climbed over advertising boards to confront fans.

Ayew, who was substituted in the 79th minute, is believed to have taken exception to something said in the Sir Elton John Stand.

His low drive had earlier restored Villa’s lead, but Aly Cissokho was sent off with 17 minutes to play and Watford mounted a late comeback.

EC’s registration exercise resumes with massive turn-out

file photoThe second phase of the Electoral Commission’s (EC)’s Limited Registration Exercise across the country has seen a massive turnout today.

A visit to some registration centers reveals long queues, with confusion and misunderstanding ensuing at some of the centres.

The EC exercise which started last week Thursday went on break yesterday but resumed today, Wednesday.

The exercise in general has been peaceful with the exception of few reported cases of violence caused by two major political parties, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Onua News reporter, Abena Obaaku Amponsah reports from Mamprobi Girls School in the Ablekuma South Constituency of the Greater Accra Region that most of the prospective voters in queues look like minors.

This, she said, created confusion between the NDC and NPP members at the centres.

The 10-day voter registration exercise will end on Sunday, May 8.

Afari Gyan was manipulated to disqualify me – Mrs. Rawlings suggests

0

file photoFormer First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has lashed out at former Chairman of the Electoral Commission for allowing himself to be used by the powers that be when he was at the helm of affairs at the Commission.

Mrs. Rawlings, who was disqualified by the Commission then chaired by Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan when she attempted to contest the presidential race on the ticket of the newly-formed National Democratic Party (NDP) in 2012, said she cannot still come to terms with why she was disqualified.

The EC had explained to Nana Konadu’s NDP that her application was rejected because she failed to meet all the requirements set out by the Commission for presidential candidates.

But on Wednesday May 04, 2016, Mrs. Rawlings told Bright Nana Amfoh on TV3 New Day she cannot accept blame for disappointing her followers in 2012.

“Any sane persons will ask why did Afari Gyan do what he did. I am still asking myself why he did that,” she questioned that disqualification. She was convinced she met all the requirements.

According her, she has tried to put that incident behind her, but for Dr. Afari Gyan, “he decided to do that, for me it will be with him for the rest of his life”.

Mrs. Rawlings explained that any time the former Chairman of the Electoral Commission sees her, he tries to plead innocent and suggests that accepting her candidature would have brought a number of troubles to him.

“I know there is something that he hasn’t told me, but others at the Commission had told me what it was,” she claimed.

The National Democratic Party broke away from the governing National Democratic Congress in the run-up to the 2012 elections.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was endorsed for the second time by the NDP on Saturday to lead the party into the 2016 general elections as its presidential candidate.

She told TV3 the vision of the NDP is to empower Ghanaians and prayed the current commissioners at the EC would not allowed themselves to be controlled by external forces

“Definitely I am not going to disappoint my supporters,” she promised.

Nana Konadu calls for impeachment of non-performing presidents

0

Nana Konadu is the flagbearer of the National Democratic PartyLeader and Founder of the National Democratic Party (NDP) Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings has advocated the consideration of a legislation to impeach Ghanaian leaders who fail to deliver on their mandates.

The former first lady contends that the four-year election cycle sometimes tends to be frustrating especially under a non-performing regimes.

The recently endorsed flagbearer of the NDP made this known on Wednesday, May 4 in an exclusive interview on TV3’s New Day.

“The people must be so empowered that we run a system that can actually give us a chance…in America they will impeach you. In the UK, they will say call new elections. Here, we have to wait till they plummet us on the head with the hammer almost in the ground before an election comes again.”

4 or 8 years

She said most Ghanaians even assume the presidential mandate is eight years. Nana Konadu blames the situation on the way the constitution has been drafted.

“We should look at our constitution again because it looks like we have a constitution that allows us to change leaders every four years. Some think it is 8 years…No it is four years. If you perform well we give you another four years. If you don’t perform well and [have] done abysmally, you don’t force us to take you back,” she told host Bright Nana Amfoh.

She lamented how elected presidents will assume office and close all avenues to the extent that whatever the leader does can only be challenged at the next elections.

“There must be something that we can do when we can see that our leader is leading us astray.”

‘Completely collapsed’

It is unclear what Nana Konadu is calling for but she was clear on the fact that Ghana’s economy has collapsed.

She said going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is a clear indication of that.

“So you don’t run to the IMF when there is nothing wrong with you. The economy has been collapsed. Completely collapsed through theft, through mismanagement and others.”

She said the NDP is ready to take up the reins of governance.

She added that the party looks good in the next elections especially given the reception it gets at gatherings.

The NDP was barred from contesting the last elections as a result of administrative errors during filing of presidential nominations, a situation the wife of Former President John Rawlings says was orchestrated.

The two were allegedly attacked and assaulted by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi-Bosiako and his goons at Krofom last week.

A complaint was lodged with the police and Antwi-Bosiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi was subsequently arrested and detained overnight on Tuesday at the Kumasi Central Police Station.

He stormed the court with four lawyers including Kwabena Kokofu, Kwame Adom Appiah and Ohene Gyan. The court was also besieged by thousands of NPP supporters who had earlier camped at the Central Police Station demanding his release.

It has however emerged that the two gentlemen who were assaulted have instructed their lawyers to formally inform the Regional Police Command of their disinterest in the case and the decision to discontinue with it.

A letter addressed to the Regional Police Commander from Obeng-Manu Law Firm, signed by Shadrack Yeboah-Obeng as lawyer for Collins Amankwa and Felix Ibrahim discussed the intention.

“Our clients are the complainants in the above mentioned case against the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi Bosiako @ Chairman Wontumi. Our clients have instructed us of their decision to pursue settlement and have accordingly instructed us to serve you notice of their said intention,” the letter said in part.

Ferry breakdown leaves passengers stranded on Volta Lake

0

Ferry accident

Hundreds of passengers and scores of vehicles were left stranded on the Volta Lake Tuesday evening when the engine of the ferry they were traveling on ceased working.

The ferry which was from Adawso [Kwahu South], was approaching the landing site at the Ekyeamfrom [Afram Plains South] section of the Volta Lake in the Eastern Region when the incident occurred at about 4:30PM. The journey was the last one for the ferry for the day.

About 30 vehicles of all forms, including Metro Mass Transit buses, and about 800 passengers as well as other goods were on board the ferry when it suddenly broke down.

ferry

Some passengers had to pay GHC4 to boat operators to rescue them from the broken down ferry to the landing site which was just about 50 metres . Others who feared for their lives considering it was late, had to sleep in the ferry until Wednesday when they paid to be rescued.

The vehicles and goods were still stranded as at 5:00PM Wednesday. Owners are still waiting for the Volta River Authority, which manages the ferry to bring a towing machinery from Akosombo to get the broken down ferry to the landing site.

It is not clear when the towing ferry is likely to arrive. As at 8:00PM Wednesday, it was said to have reached Mpeam Kortes near Ekyeamfrom. The towing process is thus likely to begin Thursday morning, sources told TV3

Meanwhile the broken down of the ferry, which is the only one and the main source of transportation for the people in the area has affected business activities in the area.

Passengers will now have to travel long distances between Adawso and Ekyeamfrom. School children will now have to risk their lives by using wooden boats which is considered unsafe.

Sources say months ago, operators of the ferry detected that one of the engines of the ferry was not working properly but they ignored it.
