Parliament to solicit public views on Nov 7 date for 2016 polls

Parliament

Parliament has scheduled a public forum on Monday, July 11 to give stakeholders and the public in general an opportunity to make inputs into the Constitution (Amendment) Bill.

The Bill seeks to change the date of Ghana’s elections from the current December 7 to the first Monday of every  November in every election year.

Currently before Parliament, the Bill is seeking to amend Article 112(4) of the 1992 Constitution.

The difficulty for this year’s polls is that elections will be held before Parliament rises.

The Public Affairs department of Parliament says the forum will take place at Committee Rooms 1 & 2 at 9:00am prompt.

The new date is expected to give enough time for a transition from one government to the other, especially in the event of run-offs.

If passed, this year’s elections will be held on November 7, 2016 while the next one will be held on November 2, 2020.
