The Commander of the Motor Traffic Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong has called on personnel to be lenient with pregnant women who drive without seat belts.
ACP Adusei Sarpong said the MTTD is relaxing the law on medical grounds.
Speaking on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa Monday, the MTTD Commander however said the directive does not apply to those with obesity.
Obesity is not pregnancy so those with obesity who drive without seat belt will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the laws of Ghana, he explained.
“If we meet a pregnant woman who is not wearing the seat belt while driving, the police will be lenient with her but the idle practice is to wear seat belt while driving,” he stated.
Nonetheless, a gynecologist, Dr. Michael Ntumi pointed out that doctors rather recommend to pregnant women to use seat belts while pregnant.
He explained it is dangerous to avoid using seat belt while driving.
However, Dr. Ntumi advised that those whose pregnancy is in the 8th month and beyond should desist from driving since the stomach may be heavy around that period.
