Amid the global push for gender inclusivity, Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, representing Dome-Kwabenya constituency, advocates for a thorough reevaluation of Ghana’s National Pledge.
She contends that the current wording, devoid of any explicit mention of mothers, is inherently gender-insensitive, neglecting the pivotal role women play in the nation’s development. Highlighting the National Pledge as a symbolic commitment to Ghana’s progress, she emphasizes that the exclusion of mothers undermines the principle of equality Ghana strives to uphold.
Safo calls upon Parliament and relevant stakeholders to review and amend the pledge to better reflect the contributions of women. She points out the omission of mothers in the line “through the toils of our fathers,” stating that it downplays the role women played in Ghana’s struggle for independence.
Safo raises this concern in light of a new provision mandating parliamentarians to recite the National Pledge at the commencement of each session.
