Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, who attempted Guinness World Record’s singing marathon by an individual, has apologized to Ghanaians for not disclosing the result before Guinness World Records (GWR) officially announced it.
The GWR announcement came in response to an inquiry on the X app, leading to public criticism and accusations of dishonesty, with some claiming she withheld the results for personal gain.
In an interview on U-TV on March 2, Asantewaa explained that her team had anticipated the outcome and planned to hold a press conference to announce the results. However, the GWR announcement took them by surprise. She expressed regret for any unintended offense in her previous interviews and apologized, aiming to move forward and continue promoting Ghana without the sing-a-thon hindering their efforts.
“We were anticipating that whatever the outcome and wherever the result will come, we would do a press conference because we started with a press conference.”
“So the way it came up honestly I was like ‘oh wow’. So I quickly went into my Instagram box and I was hoping to see at least Efua check your mail so I said let me hold on and wait for the opening of the account to see what is there before I respond.
“So let me just use the opportunity, in my response in my various interviews on Monday, probably I might have stepped on a toe or something, let me just apologize and move on because there are so many things I would want to do to still promote Ghana and I don’t want the sing-a-thon to take us back,” she explained.
GWR announced the outcome of Afua’s record attempt on February 23 through a comment on a post. They conveyed best wishes for her future attempts and noted the refund of her team’s priority review fee.
This fueled speculation that she was aware of her results but chose not to disclose them. Many Ghanaians expressed disappointment, leading Afua to clarify her loss of GWR account access. She highlighted the challenge of determining her rule violation and expressed concern about facing criticism for information she no longer had.
