Some teachers of St. John’s Primary 1 & 2 School at Accra Newtown, who were attacked by thugs, have been transferred following a request by the regional branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).
About six well-built young men on June 7 stormed the school complex and subjected the teachers there to severe beatings for punishing a pupil of the school.
The ringleader whose name was given as Hamza reportedly turned himself up to the Nima police upon pressure from his father.
The school was subsequently closed down and reopened on June 20 amidst tight security.
But the teachers complained they were still not secured, necessitating the need to transfer them.
Le-Roy Levi McNara, the Greater Accra Regional Secretary of GNAT confirmed the transfer to TV3 Tuesday.
“The Metro Director has transferred them but they are yet to get their letters today,” he told Wendy Laryea on TV3’s Midday.
They have however been asked to report to the heads of the various schools, he said.
But McNara said two of the teachers have reported back to the Metro Directorate that they are “not comfortable with the places they sent them to”.
One of them said she is not comfortable that she is being taken to an Islamic school, he explained, noting that the girl whose punishment led to the attack is a Muslim.
“She is not sure her security can be guaranteed over there,” Levi McNara recounted.
The other teacher also said she would spend more money to get to where she has been transferred to.
The Circuit Supervisors are making arrangement for the appropriate change to be done, he said.
