CPP urges EC to add voter’s ID to guarantor system

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has urged the Electoral Commission (E.C) to add the voter’s ID to the Ghana Card as part of the guarantor documents for continuous registration of voters in the 2024 elections to ensure no eligible voter is disenfranchised.

The EC in a new Constitutional Instrument (C.I) stipulated the Ghana Card to be the sole document for continuous registration. This CI is currently in Parliament, awaiting approval by the legislative body.

Director of Elections for the CPP, Yakubu Habeeb says the E.C should add the voter’s ID as a contingency plan due to the current challenges the National Identification Authority (NIA) is facing in the issuance of Ghana cards.

“The NIA is constrained by challenges; financial and logistics-wise and other things, so we think that the Electoral Commission should move along with the two; the Voter’s ID Card and then the coming in of the Ghana Card so that nobody is disenfranchised at the end of the day.”

He further added that it will help the nation save some funds to engage in other electoral processes rather than dealing with requisite eligibility registration documents.
