The Electoral Commission has resolved to give NHIA registrants who could not get their details captured during the re-registration exercise another opportunity to do so.
The EC announced at an emergency interparty advisory committee (IPAC) meeting Wednesday that it has set aside the 5th to 12th of August for the exercise, 3news’ kwakye Afreh Nuamah reports.
The Electoral Commission opened registration for the over 56,000 whose names were deleted from the voters’ register following May 5 landmark ruling by the Supreme Court. The affected persons had used the National Health Insurance cards as a form of national identity to register as voters.
But after a 10-day period – July 18-27 – the EC said 22,107 people out of the 56,772 successfully went through the process of re-registering.
Even though many complained about the low turnout, the commission initially ruled out extending the re-registration exercise.
But the EC in consultation with election stakeholders decided to re-register those who could not take advantage of the first exercise.
Meanwhile, the EC has also revealed plans to organize continuous voter registration exercise on the 19th to 26th of August ahead of the December 7 elections.
